We examine the causes and policy implications of strategic (willful) ignorance of risk as an excuse to overengage in risky health behavior. The clichéd conceptualization of cancer illness as a battle, which the patient can either win or lose, can be problematic. For patients referred to palliative care, it can cause feelings of guilt and failure. This framing of cancer, here referred to as ‘the battle script’, has been questioned in previous research, and there seems to be awareness among health practitioners that battle metaphors shoThe clichéd conceptualization of cancer illness as a battle, which the patient can either win or lose, can be problematic. The Syrian civil war has been described as a first example of the conflicts expected in the wake of climate change. The conflict, which started in 2011, was preceded by a severe drought in 2007–2009 that hit agriculture and the rural population hard. But what do we really know about what happened to Syria’s climate and agriculture before and after the start of the conflict? In this article, I summ

Corporate misconduct is a persistent feature of contemporary organizational life, yet corporations rarely acknowledge wrongdoing when confronted with allegations of harm. Instead, they rely on discursive strategies that protect legitimacy, organizational identity, and moral credibility. This chapter examines how corporations employ techniques of neutralization to defend themselves against accusati
