Indoor Air Pollution, Passive Ventilation Strategies and Thermal Comfort in Nepal

Imagine a house situated on 2 600 meters above sea level in the Himalayan mountain range. It is in the middle of January and – 2 degrees Celsius inside. The only source of additional heat you have access to is lighting an open fire or firing in the cooking stove, both of which you fuel with some kind of solid biomass such as wood or agricultural waste. The fire is intensifying, you begin to feel t

The role of policy making in the Amazon - A case study of deforestation in Brazil

This case study investigates what role the government decisions and policies have for deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. The decisions and policies are part of the immediate causes of deforestation, which exists in a theoretical framework that I have developed. This theoretical framework constitutes of three levels: underlying causes, immediate causes and sources, which lead to deforestation.

The Impact of Strategic Alignment on Business Process Management

Strategic alignment has been identified as the overarching philosophy that aligns Business Process Management (BPM) to organisational strategy, but often a gap appears between organisational strategy and operational issues. Willingness and ability to contribute to BPM have been identified as two major operational issues when achieving strategic alignment of BPM. Hence, this thesis aims to close th

Making ‘it’ work : Nurses as essential linchpins in the home care context

Registered- and community health nurses in municipal home care (hereafter referred to as home care nurses) have a demanding job that is special compared to other forms of healthcare. The work is mobile, and care in the field is often carried out in solitude. At the same time, the patients being cared for often have complex care needs, requiring cooperation and interaction. Water Exchange Mechanism of Tetraaquapalladium(II). A Variable Pressure and Variable Temperature Oxygen-217 NMR Study

Water exchange of square-planar Pd(H2O)42+ has been studied as a function of temperature (240 to 345 K) and pressure (0.1 to 260 MPa, at 324 K) by measuring the 17/O-FT-NMR line-widths of the resonance from coordinated water at 27.11 and 48.78 MHz. The following exchange parameters were obtained: k298ex = (560 ± 40) s−1, ΔH* = (49.5 ± 1.9) kJ mol−1, ΔS* = – (26 ± 6) J K−1 mol−1 and ΔV* = – (2.2 ±

The role of intermediary actors during the anchoring phase of social innovation

Social innovation has the potential to tackle many challenges humanity is facing on a global and national level. Therefore, it is necessary to understand how social innovation emerge and is disseminated. In this development social innovation anchor in niches and prevailing sociotechnical regimes and eventually form durable linkages. This study contributes insights into the anchoring process of soc

Using Program Analysis to Identify the Use of Vulnerable Functions

Open-source software (OSS) is increasingly used by software applications. It allows for code reuse, but also comes with the problem of potentially being affected by the vulnerabilities that are found in the OSS libraries. With large numbers of OSS components and a large number of published vulnerabilities, it becomes challenging to identify and analyze which OSS components need to be patched and uOpen-Source Software (OSS) is increasingly used by software applications. Influence of geometry and ventilation boundaries on simulation of the flow outside a room set-up in laboratory environment

In this study, the results from simulations of two sets of a 1/2 scale ISO room (ISO 9705) experiments are presented. In the experiments, heptane in a tray was burned in the middle of the room. Five models with various levels of complexity and geometric detail are used. The comparisons between simulations and experiments show that the fourth model provides the most accurate results with deviation

Millora 2.0: : Redovisning av resultat för 2018 –2022

Why Qing China has failed its industrialisation and modernisation in the late 19th century?

Abstract: China’s development today no doubt has had the country placed in the centre of the stage. However, the past turns out to be the opposite if we look back. While the other major countries stepped into the industrial era it seems like China was still napping with its daydreams. In this paper we dig deeply into the political, economic and social aspects of the country at the time and we thin

Women in the Workforce: A Decomposition of Female Racial Wage Gaps in Brazil

This paper analyses how racial wage gaps amongst women in the Brazilian urban labour market have evolved in response to a strong increase in workers’ skills between 2001 and 2011. For this purpose, Melly (2005, 2006) quantile decomposition frameworks will be applied using PNAD data. In so doing we acknowledges a gap in the literature by focusing on women instead of men, extending wage decompositio

The European Union and Arms’ Embargoes

This is a comparative study of China, Iran, Russia and Saudi Arabia, from an EU perspective. The EU imposed arms’ embargoes on China, Iran and Russia for reasons such as democratic concerns and military aggrandisement, the purpose of this study is therefor to find explanations to why the EU have not imposed arms’ embargoes on Saudi Arabia, a state who have arguably committed similar acts as the ot

Sensorless Control for Dynamic Testing of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines

This thesis investigates if it is possible to use the dynamic braking test method together with sensorless control. A literature study is conducted about different sensorless methods in order to find methods that fits the application. From the literature study are two sensorless methods implemented and simulated in Matlab Simulink. The results from the simulations shows that when using the two met

Biomass, community structure and phosphorus uptake of ectomycorrhizal fungi in response to phosphorus limitation and nitrogen deposition

Popular science summaryMycorrhizal associations Mycorrhizal fungi are organisms that live in association with plant roots and provide plants with water and nutrients in exchange for the sugars obtained during photosynthesis. In forested ecosystems mycorrhizal fungi are crucial for tree nutrition and trees rely heavily on these associations to take up key elements like nitrogen and phosphorus. As rHigh levels of nitrogen (N) deposition might result in a transition from N to phosphorus (P) limitation in high latitude forests. Thiscould have fundamental consequences for forest production, nutrient acquisition and nutrient leaching.I studied a Norway spruce forest in a region of high N deposition in southwest Sweden and added N, P or N+P to force thesystem to N or P limitation. I studied tree
