Ambulatory oxygen for treatment of exertional hypoxaemia in pulmonary fibrosis (PFOX trial) : A randomised controlled trial

Introduction Interstitial lung diseases are characterised by scarring of lung tissue that leads to reduced transfer of oxygen into the blood, decreased exercise capacity and premature death. Ambulatory oxygen therapy may be used to treat exertional oxyhaemoglobin desaturation, but there is little evidence to support its efficacy and there is wide variation in clinical practice. This study aims to

European agricultural policy requires a stronger performance framework to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

Non-technical summary Agriculture provides many benefits to people, such as producing food and creating jobs in rural areas, but it can also have negative impacts on the environment. We analysed existing monitoring indicators for the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to evaluate whether the CAP is effectively achieving multiple social and environmental goals. We found that the curr

STRONG for Surgery & Strong for Life - against all odds: intensive prehabilitation including smoking, nutrition, alcohol and physical activity for risk reduction in cancer surgery - a protocol for an RCT with nested interview study (STRONG-Cancer)

BackgroundThere is a large unused potential for risk reduction in the preoperative period via effective lifestyle intervention targeting co-existing risky lifestyles: Smoking, malNutrition, obesity, risky Alcohol intake and insufficient Physical activity (SNAP).This trial compares the efficacy of the integrated STRONG programme with standard care on preoperative risk reduction and secondly on SNAP

Incompleteness as a clinical characteristic and predictor of treatment outcome in obsessive-compulsive disorder

Incompleteness, that is, a feeling that things are “not just right”, is an understudied symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We used data from 167 adult individuals with OCD who received internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) to examine how incompleteness was associated with clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes. Incompleteness was assessed using the Obsessive-C

The neuroethology of ant navigation

Unlike any other group of animals, all ant species are social: individual ants share the food they gather with their nestmates and as a consequence they must repeatedly leave their nest to find food and then return home with it. These back-and-forth foraging trips have been studied for about a century and much of our growing understanding of the strategies underlying animal navigation has come fro

AFM study of lipid monolayers : III. Phase behavior of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids

The outer part of the skin, stratum corneum, is essential to the skin's barrier function. Monolayer and bulk phase behavior of stratum corneum model lipids have thus been studied. Domain formation in Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers of synthetic ceramides (C16CerIII and C24CerIII), cholesterol, and free fatty acids (lignoceric acid, C24:0, and palmitic acid, C16:0) were investigated by atomic force mi

Implementation and testing of the first prompt search for gravitational wave transients with electromagnetic counterparts

Aims. A transient astrophysical event observed in both gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) channels would yield rich scientific rewards. A first program initiating EM follow-ups to possible transient GW events has been developed and exercised by the LIGO and Virgo community in association with several partners. In this paper, we describe and evaluate the methods used to promptly ident

Mn(II)-amino acid complexes intercalated in CaAl-layered double hydroxide - Well-characterized, highly efficient, recyclable oxidation catalysts

Intercalated composite materials were prepared with CaAl-layered double hydroxide as the host and Mn(II)-amino acid (l-cysteine, l-histidine and l-tyrosine) complex anions as the guest. Two methods (intercalation of the ligand first followed by constructing the complex; preforming the complex first, then introducing it among the layers of the host) and optimization of the auxiliary conditions were

Electron Tunneling and Field-Effect Devices in mm-Wave Circuits

Framförallt har en krets tillverkats som geShort high-frequency electromagnetic pulses, also referred to as wavelets, are considered for use in various short-range impulse based ultra-wideband applications, such as communication, imaging, radar, spectroscopy, and localization. This thesis investigates field-effect and tunneling based semiconductor devices and their operation in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) impulse transceivers. The main resea

Management to Promote Flowering Understoreys Benefits Natural Enemy Diversity, Aphid Suppression and Income in an Agroforestry System

Agroforestry systems, where productive trees are integrated into agricultural land, can deliver benefits to biodiversity, natural pest control, and pollination, but the effects are highly variable. Recent advances in our understanding of flower strips in agricultural systems suggest that the management of the tree row understorey could be an important contributor to this variation. Here, we compar

Multi-structure Cortical States Deduced From Intracellular Representations of Fixed Tactile Input Patterns

The brain has a never-ending internal activity, whose spatiotemporal evolution interacts with external inputs to constrain their impact on brain activity and thereby how we perceive them. We used reproducible touch-related spatiotemporal sensory inputs and recorded intracellularly from rat (Sprague-Dawley, male) neocortical neurons to characterize this interaction. The synaptic responses, or the s

Lipid vesicular gels for topical administration of antioxidants

The application of a formulation on the skin represents an effective way to deliver bio-active molecules for therapeutical purposes. Moreover, the outermost skin layer, the stratum corneum, can be overcome by employing chemical permeation enhancers and edge activators as components. Several lipids can be considered as permeation enhancers, such as the ubiquitous monoolein, one of the most used bui

Pharmacokinetics of carbetocin, a long-acting oxytocin analogue, in nonpregnant women

The safety and pharmacokinetics of carbetocin, a long-acting oxytocin analogue, were studied in 25 healthy nonpregnant women. The distribution and elimination half-lives of a 0.4-mg intravenous dose were found to be 5.5 ± 1.6 minutes and 41 ± 11.9 minutes, respectively. Similarly, the half-lives of a 0.8-mg intravenous dose were found to be 6.1 ± 1.2 minutes and 42.7 ± 10.6 minutes. Approximately

Overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor C increases growth and alters the metastatic pattern of orthotopic PC-3 prostate tumors

Background: Prostate cancer metastasizes to regional lymph nodes and distant sites but the roles of lymphatic and hematogenous pathways in metastasis are not fully understood. Methods: We studied the roles of VEGF-C and VEGFR3 in prostate cancer metastasis by blocking VEGFR3 using intravenous adenovirus-delivered VEGFR3-Ig fusion protein (VEGFR3-Ig) and by ectopic expression of VEGF-C in PC-3 pros

Demographic data on prostitutes from Bulgaria--a recruitment country for international (migratory) prostitutes

The study was aimed at investigating the conditions and circumstances for the recruitment of prostitutes, as well as their reproductive history, working conditions, knowledge of and attitudes to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and use of prophylactic antibiotic therapy of these diseases. Two hundred prostitutes were investigated by in-depth interviews at STD clinics, private practices and ho
