Separation and Further Characterization of Hematopoietic Cell Populations Based on Phenotypic and Biophysical Properties

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are multipotent and possess self-renewal capacity. Thus, they can sustain a life-long hematopoiesis and are also capable of restoring the hematopoietic system when transplanted to a patient. In allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), a potent graft-versus-leukemia (GvL) effect must be balanced against the concomitant risk of severe immunological re

Influence of residual stress on the adhesive behavior of detonation gun sprayed WC-Co coatings

The residual stresses generated during D-Gun spraying process act as pre-existing stresses and seriously affect the various types of coating performance. To produce a reliable coating, it is necessary to know the influence of residual stress on the adhesive behavior of coating/substrate system. Based on the residual stress formula for thick coatings and accurate curvature measurements, the residua

EKO-Energi - a public voluntary programme targeted at Swedish firms with ambitious environmental goals

A total of 47 firms joined the Swedish EKO-Energi programme between 1994 and 1997. This was a public voluntary programme devoted to promoting the environmental vanguard, while disregarding the rearguard. The programme offered free energy audits and the promotion of a label, in return for implementation of energy management. Audits covered some 5% of industrial energy consumption. The most clearly

Bloch gain in AlGaAs/GaAs semiconductor superlattices

We have investigated terahertz (THz) emission due to dynamical electron transport in wide miniband GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattices. By noting that the time-domain THz emission spectroscopy contains the information on the step response of the electron system to the bias electric field, the obtained THz spectra were compared with the high-frequency conductivities predicted for miniband transport. Ex

Ethnogenesis, regional integration, and ecology in prehistoric Amazonia: Toward a system perspective

This paper critically reviews reconstructions of cultural development in prehistoric Amazonia and argues for the primacy of regional and interregional exchange in generating the complex distributions of ethno-linguistic identities traced by linguists and archaeologists in the area. This approach requires an explicit abandonment of notions of migrating "peoples" in favor of modern anthropological u

Tolerable Fire Risk Criteria for Hospitals

The aim of this study was to establish tolerable fire risk criteria for hospitals. The event tree technique was used to assess the safety level in a model hospital building. Risk profiles were derived and tolerable criteria established by evaluating the risk. The motivation behind this methodology is that buildings designed completely in accordance with today’s regulations must be considered safe

Using simple mathematical functions to simulate pathological structures--input for digital mammography clinical trial.

In this study a set of structures has been simulated to represent a range of clinically relevant breast cancer mammographic lesions including solid tumours and microcalcifications. All structures have been created using simple random-based mathematical functions and have been inserted into a subset of digital mammography images at appropriate contrast levels into various regions of the breast, inc

Videofluoroscopy of deglutition in children after repair of esophageal atresia

Purpose: To evaluate the functional disorders of the oral and pharyngeal phases of deglutition after repair of esophageal atresia in children. Material and Methods: 19 children (10 girls, 9 boys, mean age 22 months) underwent videofluoroscopy of deglutition after repair of esophageal atresia. The videofluoroscopic studies were assessed according to functional and morphological changes in the oral,

Contribution of main causes of death to social inequalities in mortality in the whole population of Scania, Sweden

Background: To more efficiently reduce social inequalities in mortality, it is important to establish which causes of death contribute the most to socioeconomic mortality differentials. Few studies have investigated which diseases contribute to existing socioeconomic mortality differences in specific age groups and none were in samples of the whole population, where selection bias is minimized. Th

The NorduGrid project: using Globus toolkit for building GRID infrastructure

The NorduGrid is the pioneering Grid project in Scandinavia. The purpose of the project is to create a Grid computing infrastructure in Nordic countries. The cornerstone of the infrastructure adopted at NorduGrid is the Globus toolkit developed at Argonne National Laboratory and University of Southern California. It is, however, missing several important high-level services. With the need to provi

Modeling and optimization of preparative reversed-phase liquid chromatography for insulin purification

This paper presents a model for reversed-phase purification of insulin from desamido insulin. The system is described by a reaction dispersive model with a competitive Langmuir isotherm. A model building and calibration method is presented and the model's region of validity is defined. The model is calibrated using only two-component experiments on the raw mixture by the inverse method and then ex

Interaction between phosphofructokinase and aldolase from Saccharomyces cevisiae studied by aqueous two-phase partitioning

Phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.1.11) and aldolase (EC 4.1.2.13) have been highly purified from Saccharomyces cerevisiae by improved protocols. Partitioning of the enzymes in aqueous polymer two-phase systems was used to detect complex formation. The partition of each enzyme was found to be affected by the presence of the other enzyme. AMP affected the partition of the individual enzymes as well as th

Fabrication and characterization of bilayer metal wire-grid polarizer using nanoimprint lithography on flexible plastic substrate

In this work, we demonstrate the fabrication of bilayer metal wire-grid polarizers and the characterization of their performance. The polarizers with 200 nm period were fabricated on flexible plastic substrates by nanoimprint lithography (NIL), followed by aluminum deposition. Transmission efficiency over 0.51 and extinction ratio higher than 950 can be achieved in the visible range when the alumi

Certified Reference Material IAEA-446 for radionuclides in Baltic Sea seaweed

A Certified Reference Material (CRM) for radionuclides in seaweed (Fucus vesiculosus) from the Baltic Sea (IAEA-446) is described and the results of the certification process are presented. The K-40, Cs-132, U-234 and Pu239+240 radionuclides were certified for this material, and information values for 12 other radionuclides (Sr-90, Tc-99, Pb-210 (Po-210), Ra-226, Ra-228, Th-228, Th-230, Th-232, U-

Long-term warming of a subarctic heath decreases soil bacterial community growth but has no effects on its temperature adaptation

We tested whether bacterial communities of subarctic heath soil are adapted to elevated temperature after experimental warming by open-top greenhouses for 7 or 17 years. The long-term warming by 1-2 degrees C significantly decreased bacterial community growth, by 28% and 73% after 7 and 17 years, respectively. The decrease was most likely due to decreased availability of labile substrate under war

Facile synthesis of luminescent TiO2 nanorods using an anionic surfactant: Their photosensitization and photocatalytic efficiency

Mixed phase (rutile/anatase)TiO2 nanorods have been synthesized using an anionic surfactant template. Nanorod synthesis has been achieved using mild reaction conditions and without using any rod-shaped template. The shape and crystallinity of the TiO2 nanomaterials can be modulated by careful control of the surfactant concentration. The novelty of the present work is that the anatase/rutile mixed

1H-1,2,3-Triazol-1-yl thiodigalactoside derivatives as high affinity galectin-3 inhibitors

Galactose C3-triazole derivatives were synthesized by Cu(I)-catalyzed cycloaddition between acetylenes and galactose C3-azido derivatives. Evaluation against galectin-3, 7, 8N (N-terminal) and 9N (N-terminal) revealed 1,4-disubstituted triazoles to be high-affinity inhibitors of galectin-3 with selectivity over galectin-7, 8N, and 9N. Conformational analysis of 1,4-di-and 1,4,5-tri-substituted gal
