Foreign trade and declining pollution in Sweden: a decomposition analysis of long-term structural and technological effects

This article examines whether there exists any causal relationship between foreign trade and declining pollution in developed countries. In other words, do developed countries outsource their problems to less developed countries rather than solve them? The case study is the Swedish economy and the two environmental indicators employed are energy consumption and CO2 emissions. No causal relationshi

Evolution of noctuid pheromone binding proteins: identification of PBP in the black cutworm moth, Agrotis ipsilon

Male black cutworm moths (Agrotis ipsilon, Lepidoptera, Noctuoidea, Noctuidae), which are attracted by a three-component pheromone blend ((Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate, Z7-12:Ac; (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate, Z9-14:Ac; (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, Z11-16:Ac), express diverse antennal pheromone binding proteins (PBPs). Two PBP isoforms (Aips-1 and Aips-2) that show 46% identity were cloned from antennal cDN

High flux composite PTMSP-silica nanohybrid membranes for the pervaporation of ethanol/water mixtures

Silica-filled poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP) layers were successfully applied for the first time on top of ultrafiltration support membranes and applied in the pervaporative separation of ethanol/water mixtures. Reduction of the thickness of the separating PTMSP top layer and addition of hydrophobic silica particles resulted in a clear flux increase as compared to dense PTMSP membranes.

Risk of Venous Thromboembolism in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis and Association With Disease Duration and Hospitalization

Context Recent reports suggest that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may be a risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE), particularly in conjunction with hospitalization. Using hospitalization data to identify RA and VTE may identify patients when they are at elevated risk for other reasons, obscuring the incompletely understood underlying association between RA and VTE and leading to inappropriate in

Unusual extraction and characterization of nanocrystalline cellulose from cellulose derivatives

Unlike many nanomaterials, nanocrystalline cellulose (CNC) is not synthesized from molecular or atomic components but rather extracted from naturally occurring cellulose. Undoubtedly, the exploitation of CNCs will become a bridge between nanoscience and natural resource products, which could play a major role in reviving the forest industry. In this work, CNC was successfully extracted from unusua

Corrector-based magnet alignment procedure

A method of realigning the quadrupole magnets in storage rings to achieve minimum dipole corrector strengths is described. The corrector strengths after realignment are mainly determined by Beam Position Monitor offsets relative to the quadrupole magnets they have been calibrated against and the extent to which magnet dipole errors stay constant during the realignment. The accuracy to which quadru

The longitudinal age and birth cohort trends of regular exercise among adults aged 16-63 years in Sweden: a 24-year follow-up study

Background: The aim of this study is to analyze longitudinally, based on four measurements at intervals of eight years, the annual effect of age group and birth cohort on regular exercise in the Swedish population from 1980-1981 to 2004-2005. Methods: We followed a randomly drawn subsample of individuals aged 16-63 years, interviewed by professional interviewers, from the Swedish Annual Level of L

Induced N-limitation of bacterial growth in soil: Effect of carbon loading and N status in soil

Application of C-rich plant residues can change the soil system from C-limitation for microbial growth to limitation by other nutrients. However, the initial nutrient status of the soil may interact with the added amount of residues in determining limitation. We studied this interactive effect in soils from the Harvard Forest LTER, where annual addition of N since 1988 has resulted in soils with d

Swelling behavior of a new biocompatible plasmid DNA hydrogel

Chemical plasmid DNA (pDNA) gels were prepared by a cross-linking reaction with ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE). Fluorescence microscopy (FM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of pDNA gels are reported. For the first time, the pDNA gels have been investigated with respect to their swelling in aqueous solution containing different additives, such as metal ions, polyamines, polyc

Study of operational performance and electrical response on mediator-less microbial fuel cells fed with carbon- and protein-rich substrates

The inducement of electroactive consortia was carried Out in dual-chamber MFCS using acetate-based substrate- and a protein-rich synthetic wastewater in fed-batch mode. The characteristics of these MFCs were then compared. MFCs based on acetate-induced consortia (MFCAce) achieved more than twice higher maximum power, and one half of optimal external resistance in comparison to MFCs based on consor

Implementation of evidence-based models in social work practice: practitioners' perspectives on an MST trial in Sweden

The implementation of new treatment methods in social work practice is warranted. Moreover, little is known about professionals' attitudes toward the introduction of evidence-based practices into their communities. Therefore, this article reports on the implementation of a Swedish research project that evaluated Multisystemic Therapy (MST). All investigating social workers in a community-based soci

Comparing universal kriging and land-use regression for predicting concentrations of gaseous oxides of nitrogen (NOx) for the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution (MESA Air)

Background: Epidemiological studies that assess the health effects of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution are used to inform public policy. These studies rely on exposure models that use data collected from pollution monitoring sites to predict exposures at subject locations. Land-use regression (LUR) and universal kriging (UK) have been suggested as potential prediction methods. We evalua

Low bone mineral density is associated with increased mortality in elderly men: MrOS Sweden

We studied the nature of the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and the risk of death among elderly men. BMD was associated with mortality risk and was independent of adjustments for other co-morbidities. A piecewise linear function described the relationship more accurately than assuming the same gradient of risk over the whole range of BMD (p = 0.020). Low BMD was associated with a

Binding and elution behavior of small deoxyribonucleic acid fragments on a strong anion-exchanger multimodal chromatography resin.

The separation behavior of small single-stranded from double-stranded DNA molecules has been determined on a multimodal (mixed-mode) chromatography system. The resin used is a strong anion exchanger which also modulates hydrophobic recognition. The intrinsic differences between single- and double-stranded DNAs concerning charge, hydrophobicity and three-dimensional structure render this form of MM

Fluorescence microscopy for quality control in nanoimprint lithography

Fluorescence microscopy is introduced as a low cost quality control process for nanoimprint lithography. To depict imprinted structures down to 1 mum lateral size and to detect residues down to 100 nm lateral size, the standard printable polymer mr-18000 is labelled with less than 0.1 wt.% fluorescent dye. Three different types of stamps are used to determine the dependence of the shape and size o

Effects of Carbon Dioxide on Growth of Proteolytic Clostridium botulinum, Its Ability To Produce Neurotoxin, and Its Transcriptome

The antimicrobial gas carbon dioxide is frequently used in modified atmosphere packaging. In the present study, the effects of CO2 (10 to 70%, vol/vol) on gene expression (measured using quantitative reverse transcription-PCR and a whole-genome DNA microarray) and neurotoxin formation (measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA]) by proteolytic Clostridium botulinum type A1 strain

Measurement of the Azimuthal Angle Dependence of Inclusive Jet Yields in Pb plus Pb Collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Measurements of the variation of inclusive jet suppression as a function of relative azimuthal angle, Delta phi, with respect to the elliptic event plane provide insight into the path-length dependence of jet quenching. ATLAS has measured the Delta phi dependence of jet yields in 0.14 nb(-1) of root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb + Pb collisions at the LHC for jet transverse momenta p(T) > 45 GeV in differen

Blood cell telomere length among patients with an isolated popliteal artery aneurysm and those with multiple aneurysm disease

Objectives: Short relative telomere length (RTL) is associated with vascular ageing, inflammation and cardiovascular risk factors. Previous studies have reported an association between abdominal aortic aneurysm and short RTL. The presence of atherosclerosis among patients with aneurysm disease may, however, be a confounder. The aim was to explore the associations between short RTL and aneurysm dis

The 21st century landscape of adult fractures - Cohort study of a complete adult regional population.

Recent reports on adult fracture epidemiology have focused mainly on the hip in elderly where increasing rates lately have changed to a decline. New reports of the preponderance of non-hip fractures in expenditure call for a wider scope. We therefore examined current overall and site-specific fracture epidemiology in adults. We ascertained all fractures diagnosed in in- and out-patient care in all
