The energy performance of glazed office buildings with double skin facades - BESTFACADE

Many modern office buildings have highly glazed facades. Their energy efficiency and indoor climate is, however, being questioned. Therefore more and more of these buildings are being built with double skin facades, which can provide improvements: a thermal buffer zone, energy savings, wind protection with open windows, fire protection, aesthetics, solar preheating of ventilation air, sound protec

Assessment and simulation of global terrestrial latent heat flux by synthesis of CMIP5 climate models and surface eddy covariance observations

The latent heat flux (LE) between the terrestrial biosphere and atmosphere is a major driver of the global hydrological cycle. In this study, we evaluated LE simulations by 45 general circulation models (GCMs) in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) by a comparison with eddy covariance (EC) observations from 240 globally distributed sites from 2000 to 2009. In addition, we imp

Investigation of Membrane Distillation Crystallization for Desalination Processes

Brine disposal remains one of the most significant environmental challenges associated with desalination, driving the need for sustainable technologies such zero liquid discharge (ZLD) systems. Among emerging ZLD techniques, membrane distillation crystallization (MDCr) offers a promising approach by integrating water recovery with salt crystallization. In MDCr, a hydrophobic membrane separates wat

Brain in Picture

Young MultiParker's image competition of 2023 We're excited to announce our upcoming "Brain in Picture" photo contest! The theme of the competition: The challenge is to capture the essence of brain research in a single snapshot. We're looking for images that showcase neuroscience's beauty, complexity, and wonder (It could be immune staining of brain cells, MRI, PET, or other things linked to your

A glucose dehydrogenase biosensor as an additional signal amplification step in an enzyme-flow immunoassay.

Both the antibody affinity and the detectability of the label are essential in deciding the final characteristics of a heterogeneous immunoassay. This paper describes an approach to obtain a supplementary enhancement of the signal generated by using an enzyme label, e.g., by including the product of the enzymatic reaction in an additional amplification cycle during the detection step performed wit

Structural basis of inhibition of the human serine hydroxymethyltransferase SHMT2 by antifolate drugs

Serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) is the major source of 1-carbon units required for nucleotide synthesis. Humans have cytosolic (SHMT1) and mitochondrial (SHMT2) isoforms, which are upregulated in numerous cancers, making the enzyme an attractive drug target. Here, we show that the antifolates lometrexol and pemetrexed are inhibitors of SHMT2 and solve the first SHMT2-antifolate structures.

Policing Migration: Described and Observed Cooperation Experiences of Police and Border Guards in the Baltic Sea Area

“Collaboration” is generally portrayed as being beneficial to intelligence and operational police work, even if previous collaborative research shows that conflicts are common between authorities who are supposed to cooperate. The present study focuses on how officers collaborate in their day-to-day management of borderguarding, taking into consideration the different social and cultural backgroun“Collaboration” is generally portrayed as being beneficial to intelligence and operational police work, even if previous collaborative research shows that conflicts are common between authorities who are supposed to cooperate. Estimation of local near-surface wind conditions - a comparison of WASP and regression based techniques

This study compares the performance of different models used to assess the local wind near-surface conditions at an agricultural site in Scania, southern Sweden. The methods are: (a) the WASP model (Wind Analysis and Application Program), (b) separate linear regressions of the two wind vector components, (c) a regression model based on vector correlation, and (d) linear regression of scalar wind.

Capable to Care? Parenting Support Policies and the Changing Concept of Care

This paper explores the changing meanings and understandings of the concept of care in parenting support policies in Sweden since the 1990s. Caring responsibilities and practices has historically been framed and negotiated within general family policy reforms, comprising universal child allowances and generous parental leave schemes combined with publicly funded childcare, in turn closely related Åsa LundqvistProfessor in SociologyDepartment of SociologyLund UniversitySwedenAsa.Lundqvist@soc.lu.seAbstractCapable to Care? Effects of data uncertainty in Swedish critical load assessment for forest soils.

The effects of input data uncertainty on the critical loads and exceedance estimates for Swedish forest soils was assessed using Monte Carlo simulations of the PROFILE model. The study focuses on the effects of data uncertainty on the 5%-ile critical load at 150 × 150 km resolution and the 95%-ile exceedance at 150 × 150 km and 50 × 50 km resolution. The results indicate that data uncertainty limi
