Parkinson's disease (PD) patients display motor symptoms, e.g. tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia, largely due to a dramatic loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Grafts of human embryonic dopamine neurons can survive in the striatum and reduce several of the motor symptoms. Several lines of evidence suggest that a crucial threshold of surviving dopaminergic neurons must be exceeded

Fatigue cracking due to traffic loading, in combination with permanent deformation (rutting), thermal cracking, irregularities, frost heave and reflective cracking are some of the major criteria used when designing an asphalt concrete pavement. The objective of this Ph.D. project is to eva

A large matched employer-employee data set for Sweden is used to test several predictions from tournament theory. For white-collar workers a positive and significant effect of intra-firm wage dispersion on profits and average pay is found, using various measures of wage dispersion. This result is robust for controlling for firm differences in human capital and firm fixed-effects as well as for ins

The uptake of chloromercuribenzene-p-sulphonic acid (CMBS) was studied in microdissected pancreatic islets of ob/ob-mice. After rapid initial binding, the uptake increased linearly with time, suggesting that CMBS diffused into the plasma membrane. The binding of CMBS was rapidly reversed on exposure to l-cysteine. Whereas glibenclamide had no effect, glucose and 4-acetamido-4′-isothiocyanostilbene

We study the effects of preschool attendance on children's schooling and cognitive skills in Kenya and Tanzania. We use a within-household estimator and data from nationally representative surveys of school-age children's literacy and numeracy skills, which include retrospective information on preschool attendance. In both countries, school entry rules are not strictly enforced, and children who a

Young adults experiencing mental health problems often need both individual support and educational accommodations to successfully complete their studies. Recent research also points to the need for career-related, educational services in a labor market that increasingly demands formal education or training. The aim of this study was to investigate the development of supported education services i

In the present paper, linear substructures with nonlinearities localized at their interfaces, such as the joints in a beam structure, are studied. By subdivision of the total structure into substructures, reduced subsystems are obtained by component mode synthesis. Nonlinear elements are introduced at supports or between substructures. A numerical example is presented where a beam subjected to bla
