Subarachnoid hemorrhage-induced upregulation of the 5-HT1B receptor in cerebral arteries in rats

Object. Cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) leads to reduced blood flow in the brain. Inspired by organ culture-induced changes in the receptor phenotype of cerebral arteries, the authors investigated possible changes in the 5-hydroxytryptamine (HT) receptor phenotype after experimental SAH. Methods. Experimental SAH was induced in rats by using an autologous prechiasmatic i

Subjective recording of fetal movements. III. Screening of a pregnant population; the clinical significance of decreased fetal movement counts

In order to determine the clinical significance of decreased fetal movement counts, pregnancy outcome was compared between women with decreased fetal movement counts on their Fetal Movement Charts (FMC) (n = 161) and women with normal fetal movement counts (n = 1,354). 1,515 women in the third trimester of pregnancy counted fetal movements for 15 min in the evening and noted the count on a FMC. An

Dynamic analysis of an O2 separating membrane reactor for CO2-emission free power processes

The need to reduce CO2 emissions from fossil-fuel based power production creates the need for new power plant solutions where the CO 2 is captured and stored or reused. Oxygen Transfer Membrane (OTM) is the key component of oxy-fuel combustion processes as pure oxygen is usually required to process reactions (e.g. Natural Gas Combined cycle NGCC, Pulverised Coal-fired power p

On the interaction between two fixed spherical particles

The variation of the drag (CD) and lift coefficients (CL) of two fixed solid spherical particles placed at different positions relative each other is studied. Simulations are carried out for particle Reynolds numbers of 50, 100 and 200 and the particle position is defined by the angle between the line connecting the centers of the particles and the free-stream direction (a) and the separation dist

Video-assisted gastrostomy in infants less than 1 year.

The objectives of this study were to report our experience with the laparoscopic video-assisted gastrostomy technique in infants operated during their first year of life. A total of 53 infants (35 males, 18 females) aged 6 +/- 3 months, varying from 3 weeks to 11 months, underwent video-assisted gastrostomy. They were prospectively followed up. Included are infants with neurological dysfunction, c

Brain metastases--comparison of gadodiamide injection-enhanced MR imaging at standard and high dose, contrast-enhanced CT and non-contrast-enhanced MR imaging

The aim was to compare the abilities of contrast-enhanced CT, non-contrast-enhanced MR imaging and contrast-enhanced MR imaging using standard (0.1 mmol/kg b.w.) and high (0.3 mmol/kg b.w.) doses of Gadodiamide injection to detect brain metastases (i.e. blood-brain barrier damage). Sixteen patients with at least 2 metastases found by CT were evaluated by MR imaging using non-contrast-enhanced spin

Adsorptive fouling of modified and unmodified commercial polymeric ultrafiltration membranes

The fouling tendency, due to adsorption on the pore walls, of two pairs of modified and unmodified ultrafiltration membranes, with similar observed retentions determined by dextran and gel permeation chromatography, was studied. The membranes investigated were made of modified and unmodified polyaramide (PA) and modified and unmodified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The PVDF membrane was surface-

Advanced intercross line mapping of Eae5 reveals Ncf-1 and CLDN4 as candidate genes for experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

Eae5 in rats was originally identified in two F-2 intercrosses, (DA x BN) and (E3 X DA), displaying linkage to CNS inflammation and disease severity in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), respectively. This region overlaps with an arthritis locus, Pia4, which was also identified in the (E3 X DA) cross. Two congenic strains, BN.DA-Eae5 and BN.DA-Eae5.R1, encompassing the previously des

On acoustic particle and cell manipulation in microfluidic systems

Akustisk partikelhantering kan användas exempelvis för att separera, tvätta, sortera, låsa fast och distribuera pThe combination of laminar flows in microfabricated channels and acoustic forces induced in ultrasonic standing wave fields offers new possibilities for advanced particle and cell manipulation in lab-on-a-chip applications as well as in relatively high throughput applications. Acoustic particle manipulation systems can be used e.g. to separate, wash, sort, trap or distribute particles in microflui

Backcross and partial advanced intercross analysis of nonobese diabetic gene-mediated effects on collagen-induced arthritis reveals an interactive effect by two major loci.

Genetic segregation analysis between NOD and C57BL strains have been used to identify loci associated with autoimmune disease. Only two loci (Cia2 and Cia9) had earlier been found to control development of arthritis, whereas none of the previously identified diabetes loci was of significance for arthritis. We have now made a high-powered analysis of a backcross of NOD genes on to the B10.Q strain

Spermatophore size and multiple mating: Effects on reproductive success and post-mating behaviour in the Indian meal moth

Ensuring fatherhood is an important issue in polygamous species. In many lepidopteran species, the male inserts a large package (spermatophore) consisting of sperm, accessory gland fluids and nutrients into the female's bursa copulatrix during copulation. In most species it has been shown that a large mate donation causes females either to stop calling, or to prolong the time until re-mating, here

Disentangling dysthymia from major depressive disorder in suicide attempters' suicidality, comorbidity and symptomatology.

Dysthymia and major depressive disorder (MDD) are both risk diagnoses for suicidal behaviour. The aim of the present study was to identify clinical differences between these disorders, with a special reference to dysthymia. We studied suicidal behaviour, comorbidity and psychiatric symptoms of inpatient suicide attempters with dysthymia and MDD. We used DSM III-R diagnostics, the Suicide Assessmen

Ultrastructural synaptic features differ between alpha- and gamma-motoneurons innervating the tibialis anterior muscle in the rat

We investigated the synaptology of retrogradely labeled spinal motoneurons after injection of horseradish peroxidase into the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of adult rat. In total, 32 TA motoneurons were investigated in the electron microscope and demonstrated a bimodal size distribution with cell diameter peaks at 40 mu m and 20 mu m, likely representing alpha- and gamma-motoneurons, respectively.

Prognostic factors for survival in patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma undergoing nonmyeloablative allogeneic stem cell transplantation

BACKGROUND. The objective of this study was to identify prognostic factors for predicting survival in patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) who had undergone an allogeneic stem cell transplantation after failure on immunotherapy. METHODS. The authors Studied 70 patients with advanced RCC Who underwent allogeneic transplantation with a fludarabine-based, reduced-intensity regimen. Ten p
