Plant substance inhibits cancer stem cells
Lab experiments show that the chemical compound damsin found in the plant Ambrosia arborescens inhibits the growth and spread of cancer stem cells. The similar but synthetically produced ambrosin has the same positive effect, according to researchers at Lund University and University Major of San Andrés in La Paz, Bolivia. The plant Ambrosia arborescens grows at a high elevation in large parts of

New link between gut bacteria and obesity
Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have discovered a new link between gut bacteria and obesity. They found that certain amino acids in our blood can be connected to both obesity and the composition of the gut microbiome. We know less about the significance of our gut bacteria than what many books and magazines on the subject seem to suggest. A lot of the research on the topic is based on ani

New research organisation in BECC - from clusters to Grand Challenge Themes
Although not yet decided, we have good reasons to believe that the funding of the 43 Strategic Research Areas (SRAs) including BECC will continue. As a result, we are now preparing for the long-term future, including a new internal structure where Challenged Themes replace the former Clusters with the aim to increase the integration between disciplines. At the BECC 2015 annual meeting, we discusse
