Investigating the role of DnaJ proteins in the suppression of tau aggregation

Tauopathies belong to a group of neurodegenerative diseases that are characterized by the presence of neurofibrillary tangles in neurons and includes diseases such as Alzheimer´s disease and frontotemporal dementia. Neurofibrillary tangles are insoluble deposits that are composed mainly of tau, which normally acts to stabilize microtubules. In disease, tau forms fibrillar and oligomeric species, wHelpers of helpers – co-chaperone proteins and protein aggregation Proteins are one of the essential molecules that make up our bodies and the bodies of all living beings. Chaperone proteins exist as a protein ¨helper,¨ folding, maintaining, and regulating other proteins. To help these helpers, co-chaperone proteins, ¨helpers of helpers,¨ regulate chaperone proteins and help them by carrying out

Whose self-determination? - A critical examination on the right to self-determination and its role during the process of decolonisation

This essay seeks to analyse self-determination from a critical perspective based on postcolonial theory. By examining the historical roots of self-determination, its connection to international human rights as well as to concepts such as sovereignty and nationalism can be established. It should also be noticed that self-determination is closely intertwined with the history of European Enlightenmen

Effective Judicial Protection of Individuals - A duty for the Court of Justice or the National Courts?

The starting point and reoccurring theme of this work is the accommodation of the effective judicial protection of individuals in the European Union system of review of validity of its acts. The discussion of this issue was intense during the decade before the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty due to the Court of Justice’s judgments in the two famous cases Unión de Pequeños Agricultores and Jégo-Quéré

Bonden i Graven Bredvid - En osteologisk studie av den medeltida befolkningen i Norra Nöbbelöv och deras skador på skeletten

This paper is the result of an osteological study of the skeletal remains uncovered during an archaeological excavation of the medieval cemetery in Norra Nöbbelöv. The purpose of the study is to compare the material from the rural site (Norra Nöbbelöv) with materials excavated from the old medieval graveyards in the city of Lund. The aim is to try and shed some light on the question of whether th

Simulation of Transformer Inrush Currents and Their Impact on the Grid

This MSc Thesis’s main objective is to determine the impact of transformer inrush currents in the grid and develop a tool that helps E.ON Energidistribution AB evaluate transformer sizing. The motivation of E.ON is to have a more precise way to estimate the energization consequences of increasing the transformer size in the grid, since currently is being used a rule of thumb that relates the trans

Precipitation as driver of carbon fluxes in 11 African ecosystems

This study reports carbon and water fluxes between the land surface and atmosphere in eleven different ecosystems types in Sub-Saharan Africa, as measured using eddy covariance (EC) technology in the first two years of the CarboAfrica network operation. The ecosystems for which data were available ranged in mean annual rainfall from 320 mm (Sudan) to 1150 mm (Republic of Congo) and include a spect

Improving the preoperative classification of adnexal masses as benign or malignant by second-stage tests

Objective The aim of this study was to establish when a second-stage diagnostic test may be of value in cases where a primary diagnostic test has given an uncertain diagnosis of the benign or malignant nature of an adnexal mass. Methods The diagnostic performance with regard to discrimination between benign and malignant adnexal masses for mathematical models including ultrasound variables and for

Expression of ghrelin is correlated to a favorable outcome in invasive breast cancer

Background. Expression of the peptide hormones ghrelin and obestatin has previously been demonstrated in human mammary glands. However, the clinical implications of the expression of these peptides in breast cancer are unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential clinical value of ghrelin and obestatin as breast cancer biomarkers. Methods. A tissue microarray containing breast c

Ozone risk for vegetation in the future climate of Europe based on stomatal ozone uptake calculations

The negative impacts of surface ozone (O(3)) on vegetation are determined by external exposure, leaf gas exchange and plant antioxidant defence capacity, all dependent on climate and CO(2) concentrations. In this study the influence of climate change on simulated stomatal O(3) uptake of a generic crop and a generic deciduous tree at ten European sites was investigated, using the LRTAP Mapping Manu

CMOS Transceiver Front-Ends in Mobile Communication Handsets - Architectures and Building Blocks

For mobile communication systems in the low-GHz range, CMOS has increasingly become the technology of choice, and the level of integration in mobile handsets has risen. The use of off-chip components, which increases the handset assembly time and costs, is preferably avoided. However, integrating a complete transceiver on a single chip leads to disturbances between building blocks. This imposes ne

Better bicycle helmets for commuters – evaluation of ventilation

As a continuation of the work on the development of setting the requirements for ventilation of a bicycle helmet for commuters, 15 full scale helmet mock-ups were created by the students of the Estonian Academy of Arts. In order to encourage creativity for ventilation solutions the students were not restricted to consider the other properties except it was pointed out that the meaning of helmets u

Acidification-induced chemical changes in coniferous forest soils in southern Sweden 1988-1999

Thirty-two Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands in southern Sweden were studied for a period of 12 years to evaluate acidification-induced chemical changes in the soil. Soil, at 20-30 cm depth in the mineral layer, was sampled three times during this period (1988, 1993 and 1999). The results show that pH(BaCl2) in mineral soil decreased by, on average

Spline baseline model flexibility independently affects the accuracy and precision of in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectral fitting in a metabolite-specific manner not visually predicted by fit residuals

In vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) data often exhibit baselines or low-amplitude signal variations resulting from residual water, imperfectly suppressed lipids, low-amplitude metabolites not considered for fitting, and other features not represented in a basis set. While multitudinous approaches exist to model these baselines in 1H-MR spectral analysis, many continue to lack s

Libraries of things : at the intersection of sharing and social economies

This chapter by Emily Silva and Oksana Mont examines the role of libraries of things (LoTs) in reducing consumption through socially sustainable practices. It highlights LoTs' potential to address sustainability and service challenges in circular and sharing business models. The study, based on data from 90 LoTs across North America, Europe and Australia, explores motivations and business model co

Patient choice and socioeconomic disparities in the quality of healthcare : Evidence from Swedish registry data

This study explores socioeconomic disparities in how patients trade off quality against other features when choosing their primary care provider. We use a unique registry dataset linking the choices of individuals who recently moved to a new market, and therefore need to select a new provider, with detailed individual-level measures of socioeconomic status (SES) and provider-level measures of pati

The blue straggler V106 in NGC6791 : A prototype progenitor of old single giants masquerading as young

We determine the properties of the binary star V106 in the old open cluster NGC6791. We identify the system to be a blue straggler cluster member by using a combination of groundbased and Kepler photometry and multi-epoch spectroscopy. The properties of the primary component are found to be Mp ~ 1.67M⊙, more massive than the cluster turn-off, with Rp ~ 1.91R⊙ and Teff = 7110 ± 100 K. The secondary
