Strengthening the global surgical workforce: Aspects of access, migration and quality

Background. Over five billion people worldwide lack access to safe and affordable surgery and anesthesia care when required. There is a critical unmet need for surgical care, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). The shortage of surgical providers is one of the most influential barriers to receiving surgical care, and the maldistribution is aggravated by doctors emigrating

Mediatization and cultural heritage: Plural voices and new platforms

Recent work on heritage and social media has highlighted how social media offer new possibilities for citizens to share memories, identities, local culture and heritage, and thus constitute a more participatory and democratic platform (Giaccardi 2012). Social media encourage and enable new forms of engagement and interpretations of the heritage through user-generated content, personal reflections,

Organized self-help housing as an enabling shelter & development strategy. Lessons from current practice, institutional approaches and projects in developing countries

The aim of this study is to develop better understanding on organized self-help housing as an enabling shelter and development strategy to overcome poverty and build more resilient communities.

Feeding appetite suppressing thylakoids to pigs alters pancreatic lipase/colipase secretion

The mechanism for a new appetite suppressor named thylakoids (membrane proteins derived from spinach leaves) was examined in vivo in pigs. Thylakoids inhibit the lipase/colipase hydrolysis of triacylglycerols (TG) in vitro and suppress food intake, decrease body weight gain and raise the circulating satiety hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) in rats but its mechanism in vivo remains unclear. We hypothe

The association of meniscal damage with joint effusion in persons without radiographic osteoarthritis: the Framingham and MOST osteoarthritis studies

Objective: To assess the cross-sectional association between meniscal status and joint effusion on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in knees without radiographic osteoarthritis (OA). Design: Knees without OA (Kellgren/Lawrence grade 0) from the Framingham and MOST studies were examined by MRI. Meniscal status was assessed with a score of 0-4 in the anterior horn/body/posterior horn of the medial/l

The Purity of Separation of Concerns: The Service Oriented Business Process -a Design Approach for Business Agility

Child mortality because of infectious preventable diseases is a global tragedy. Millions of children die in vain every year. This thesis presents a sincere effort to decrease child mortality on given reason. The servitized Business Information System (BIS) named VacSam provides unique vaccination recommendations to any child thus service orienting a part of the Swedish vaccination activity. Design

Patenting the Human Genome

Biotechnology is a field that is capable of evoking mixed emotions. This is particularly the case when the discussion encompasses the subject of human genome research. On the one hand there are major benefits that can spring from the studying of human genes. On the other hand it has been met with many moral and philosophical disagreements. Accompanying the debate about biotechnology itself has bee

Syftet med denna framställning har varit att undersöka hur det rättsliga förälThere is no explicit prohibition against surrogacy in Swedish law, but other regulations preclude surrogate arrangements. Considering the fact that Swedish citizens still use surrogacy abroad as a means to have a child, this can become problematic. Upon returning home with their child they experience difficulties, particularly pertaining to being recognized as the legal parents. The purpose of thi

A competitive electricity market; The Swedish implementation of the EU unbundling regulations

In the 1990’s there was a lot of discussions in the EU regarding energy and the need for a common EU energy market. Both for the sake of competition, but also in order to provide a stable supply of energy to all EU citizens. The EU began promoting an EU energy market. The first EU legal acts in this area concerned the establishment of an EU energy market and consequently to create competition be

Materialet består av intervjuer, delta-gande observation, frågelistor och internetbaserad etnografi som samlats in och analyserats genom en fenomenolThis thesis in applied cultural analysis investigate the phenomenon of “kafferep” (coffee par-ty), a Swedish term that is usually described as a social gathering where women meet in the home to drink coffee, eat cookies and cake, and talk. A gathering commonly popular in the late 19th century that today has been revitalized, where young women dress up in 50’s clothes and perform their idea of the

Discovering Subgroups of Children With High Mortality in Urban Guinea-Bissau : Exploratory and Validation Cohort Study

divided the data set temporally, assessing the persistence of identified subgroups over different periods. The reassessment of mortality risk used the targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE) method to achieve more robust causal modeling. Results: We analyzed data from 21,005 children. The mortality risk (6 weeks to 3 years of age) was 5.2% (95% CI 4.8%-5.6%) for children born between 2003 an

Decolonizing the Atmosphere: The Climate Justice Movement on Climate Debt

A central concept raised by the climate justice movement is climate debt. Here, the claims and warrants of the movement support for climate debt is identified through an argumentation analysis of their central manifestos. It is found that the climate debt claim is understood as primarily restorative, in the sense that the environmental space of the developing countries must be returned, “decolonizA central concept raised by the climate justice movement is climate debt. Characterization of Decellularized Implants for Extracellular Matrix Integrity and Immune Response Elicitation

Biological scaffold is a popular choice for the preparation of tissue-engineered organs and has the potential to address donor shortages in clinics. However, biological scaffolds prepared by physical or chemical agents cause damage to the extracellular matrix (ECM) by potentially inducing immune responses after implantation. The current study explores the fate of the decellularized (DC) scaffolds

Machine Learning for Perception and Localization: Efficient and Invariant Methods

This thesis covers a set of methods related to machine perception and localization, which are two important building blocks of artificial intelligence. In Paper I, we explore the concept of regression via classification (RvC), which is often used for perception tasks where the target variable is either ordinal or when the distance metric of the target space is not well-suited as an objective funct

Treatment outcome with pencillin G or cloxacillin in penicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus bactearemi

An increasing proportion of penicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (PSSA) has been reported over the last years. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare penicillin G with cloxacillin in the treatment of PSSA bloodstream infections. The primary outcome was the mortality rate after 90 days and the secondary outcome was the development of treatment complications of varying severity.
