Susceptibility to Paget's disease of bone is influenced by a common polymorphic variant of osteoprotegerin

UNLABELLED: To clarify the role of the TNFRSF11B gene encoding osteoprotegerin (OPG), in Paget's disease of bone (PDB) we studied TNFRSF11B polymorphisms in an association study of 690 UK subjects and in a worldwide familial study of 66 kindreds. We found that the G1181 allele of TNFRSF11B, encoding lysine at codon 3 of the OPG protein, predisposes to both sporadic and familial PDB.INTRODUCTION: P

Global parameters sensitivity analysis of modeling water, energy and carbon exchange of an arid agricultural ecosystem

Agricultural ecosystems are important for regulating terrestrial hydrological and carbon cycles. Hydrological and carbon processes in agricultural ecosystem models are complex due to interactions between parameters. It is therefore crucial to identify parameter sensitivity before a process-based model is applied for simulations and predictions of water, energy and carbon fluxes in agricultural ec

Educational inequalities in all-cause and cause-specific mortality among people with gout : a register-based matched cohort study in southern Sweden

BACKGROUND: Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis with a rising prevalence around the globe. While educational inequalities in incidence and prevalence of gout have been reported, no previous study investigated educational inequality in mortality among people with gout. The aim of this study was to assess absolute and relative educational inequalities in all-cause and cause-specific morta

The role of customer experience in the perceived value–word-of-mouth relationship

Purpose: The customer experience (CX), as revealed in the literature-based debate, has been variously viewed as either a driver or an outcome of customer-perceived value (CPV). However, the association of CPV, CX and word-of-mouth (WoM) behavior remains nebulous to date, thereby generating an important research gap. In response and to bridge this gap, this study aims to explore CX’s role in the CP

Hospitalizations for mitochondrial disease across the lifespan in the U.S

Importance: Mitochondrial disease is being diagnosed with increasing frequency. Although children with mitochondrial disease often have severe, life-limiting illnesses, many survive into adulthood. There is, however, limited information about the impact of mitochondrial disease on healthcare utilization in the U.S. across the lifespan. Objectives: To describe the characteristics of inpatient hospi

Factors associated with mental distress among undergraduate students in northern Tanzania

Background: Mental distress is a major public health problem which includes anxiety, depression and somatic symptoms such as sleeping problems, fatigue and headache. University students are consistently reported to have higher levels of mental distress compared to the general population. Although university students with mental distress have significantly impaired cognitive functioning, learning d

Crosstalk in Wideband Wireline Systems -- Curse and Blessing

The fourth generation broadband (4GBB) concept aims for ubiquitous and high-speed data communication over the existing twisted copper pairs between the last distribution point and the customer premise equipment. Although it saves deployment cost for the last-mile communication, using the existing copper infrastructure makes the system vulnerable to crosstalk due to electro-magnetic coupling from t

Household Satisfaction and Drinking Water Quality in Rural Areas : A Comparison with Official Access Data

Background: Access to safe and reliable water and sanitation remains a critical public health and development challenge, with rural and low-income communities being disproportionately affected by inadequate services and heightened exposure to waterborne diseases. Despite global efforts and infrastructure-based progress indicators, significant disparities persist, and these often overlook users’ pe

Agroforestry the Silver Bullet for Sustainable Agriculture? A multi-stakeholder analysis of Peru's Agroforestry Policy in fostering sustainable smallholder agriculture in the Amazon.

Over three-quarters of the world’s poor live in rural areas and many of them depend on agriculture to earn a living. In a context of climate change, Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) is addressed as one of the main sources of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Hence, the sustainability transition in the agricultural sector has become one of the most prominent development areas in the 2

Mash It Up! Exploring the Phenomenon of Retail Mash-Up and the Survival of the Physical Retail Place in a Digitalised World

Forces such as globalisation, digitalisation and changes in consumer behaviour have led to a discussion among practitioners as well as scholars whether the physical retail place will stay relevant or even exist in the future. One way for brick-and-mortar retailers to stay competitive is to adopt new and innovative business models and formats, alongside a focus on the customer experience and how to

Exploring the Needs, Expectations, and Realities of Mental Healthcare for Transgender Adults: A Grounded Theory Study on Experiences in Sweden

Transgender persons experience a disproportionate representation in adverse mental health conditions globally. In Sweden there are tangible efforts to improving mental healthcare overall, but as a minority population, transgender persons still struggle with meeting their mental healthcare needs. While social factors such as stigma and discrimination act as catalysts for this burden, there is an ab

Vision och praktik : en studie av hur e-arkiv inom offentlig förvaltning har anpassats för användning

This Master’s thesis investigates how public administrations in Sweden have developed e-archives and how these have been tailored according to the needs of use. The study takes off from within the context of what is called e-Government, which means that public administrations increase their use of IT in order to facilitate their operation and interaction with citizens. This development has been ch

Regulating Digital Platforms Regulating Digital Platforms - The Interplay Between EU Competition Law and the Digital Markets Act

The rise of digital services has reshaped the EU internal digital market and revealed significant shortcomings in EU competition law. In response, the EU introduced the Digital Markets Act (DMA), an ex-ante sector-specific legislative approach to address these issues. The DMA’s aim is to complement traditional competition law by addressing fairness and contestability within the internal market thr

Investigating Circularity for Organic Waste Management: An Exploratory Single Case Study at Averda in Cape Town

As climate change and unsustainable waste practices present major global challenges, effective waste management in developing countries becomes critically important. In South Africa, organic waste constitutes a significant share of general waste and is often landfilled, contributing to methane emissions and serious health risks for the population. In response, the Western Cape province has introdu

High-Dose Versus Standard-Dose Twice-Daily Thoracic Radiotherapy in Limited-Stage SCLC : Final Survival Data, Long-Term Toxicity, and Relapse Patterns in a Randomized, Open-Label, Phase II Trial

Introduction: Chemoradiotherapy is standard treatment for limited-stage SCLC. However, most patients relapse and there is a need for better treatment. We investigated whether twice-daily thoracic radiotherapy (TRT) of 60 Gy/40 fractions improves survival compared with the established schedule of 45 Gy/30 fractions. Here, we report final survival data and long-term toxicity. Methods: Randomized, op

Weight bias internalization and beliefs about the causes of obesity among the Canadian public

Background: Explicit weight bias is known as negative attitudes and beliefs toward individuals due to their weight status and can be perpetuated through misconceptions about the causes of obesity. Individuals may also experience weight bias internalization (WBI) when they internalize negative weight-related attitudes and self-stigmatize. There is a paucity of research on the beliefs about the caus
