Dimerization of small integral membrane protein 1 promotes cell surface presentation of the Vel blood group epitope

The Vel blood group antigen is carried on the short extracellular segment of the 78-amino-acid-long, type II transmembrane protein SMIM1 of unknown function. Here, using biochemical analysis and flow cytometry of cells expressing wild-type and mutant alleles of SMIM1, we demonstrate that dimerization of SMIM1 promotes cell surface display of the Vel epitope. We show that SMIM1 dimerization is medi

Molecular characterization of an outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus (subgroup A) in Havana, Cuba, by monoclonal antibodies and restriction mapping (N gene)

Twenty-one respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) strains isolated from one outbreak in Havana, Cuba (1994 to 1995), were analyzed to determine their relatedness. All isolated strains were classified as subgroup A by monoclonal antibodies. Of 21 RSV strains examined, 20 were classified as having restriction pattern NP4 and only 1 was classified as having restriction pattern NP5.

Pharyngeal reflux after gastric pull-up esophagectomy with neck and chest anastomoses

OBJECTIVE: Pharyngeal reflux after a gastric pull-up esophagectomy may cause aspiration. This study evaluates acid exposure to the esophageal remnant and to the pharynx after gastric pull-up esophagectomy and evaluates the impact of additional dissection of the esophagus that is necessary for neck anastomoses versus no neck exploration and proximal chest anastomoses.METHODS: Forty-seven patients h

Therapeutic Effects of IL-1RA against Acute Bacterial Infections, including Antibiotic-Resistant Strains

Innate immunity is essential for the anti-microbial defense, but excessive immune activation may cause severe disease. In this study, immunotherapy was shown to prevent excessive innate immune activation and restore the anti-bacterial defense. E. coli-infected Asc−/− mice develop severe acute cystitis, defined by IL-1 hyper-activation, high bacterial counts, and extensive tissue pathology. Here, t

The ABC-Stroke Risk Score and Effects of Atrial Fibrillation Screening on Stroke Prevention : Results From the Randomized LOOP Study

BACKGROUND: The ABC-stroke score is a risk scheme for prediction of stroke or systemic embolism (SE) in atrial fibrillation (AF). This study sought to examine whether the score could be useful in predicting stroke in AF-naïve individuals and risk stratifying for AF screening. METHODS AND RESULTS: The LOOP (Atrial Fibrillation Detected by Continuous ECG Monitoring Using Implantable Loop Recorder to

CCR3 deficiency is associated with increased osteoclast activity and reduced cortical bone volume in adult male mice

Increasing evidence emphasizes the importance of chemokines and chemokine receptors as regulators of bone remodeling. The C-C chemokine receptor 3 (CCR3) is dramatically upregulated during osteoclastogenesis, but the role of CCR3 in osteoclast formation and bone remodeling in adult mice is unknown. Herein, we used bone marrow macrophages derived from adult male CCR3-proficient and CCR3-deficient m

MDM2 amplification in rod-shaped chromosomes provides clues to early stages of circularized gene amplification in liposarcoma

Well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLS) displays amplification of genes on chromosome 12 (Chr12) in supernumerary ring or giant marker chromosomes. These structures have been suggested to develop through chromothripsis, followed by circularization and breakage-fusion-bridge (BFB) cycles. To test this hypothesis, we compared WDLSs with Chr12 amplification in rod-shaped chromosomes with WDLSs with ri

Synthetic bacterial vesicles combined with tumour extracellular vesicles as cancer immunotherapy

Bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMV) have gained attention as a promising new cancer vaccine platform for efficiently provoking immune responses. However, OMV induce severe toxicity by activating the innate immune system. In this study, we applied a simple isolation approach to produce artificial OMV that we have named Synthetic Bacterial Vesicles (SyBV) that do not induce a severe toxic respon

Detoxified synthetic bacterial membrane vesicles as a vaccine platform against bacteria and SARS-CoV-2

The development of vaccines based on outer membrane vesicles (OMV) that naturally bud off from bacteria is an evolving field in infectious diseases. However, the inherent inflammatory nature of OMV limits their use as human vaccines. This study employed an engineered vesicle technology to develop synthetic bacterial vesicles (SyBV) that activate the immune system without the severe immunotoxicity

Detection of Acromegaly From Facial Images Using Machine Learning : A Comparison With Clinical Experts

Context Substantial diagnostic delay in acromegaly contributes to increased morbidity and mortality. Screening attempts in high-risk groups have yielded few positive cases, underscoring the need for simple and precise prescreening methods. Objective Machine-learning analysis of facial images shows promise for acromegaly detection but requires validation in larger, well-characterized cohorts using

Architecture is a luxury a broken society does not care for Seven Essays on: Current Architecture & The Human Experience

This work consists of seven essays, with each concerning a specific subject that is related to architecture. There is additional text, which pertains to this work's examination requirements for graduating the architecture-program at Lund Technical University. This work is a creative explorations through writing as a tool; through text; becoming able to formulate, conceptualize, develop and ext

Quality of Life in Adults With Transposition of the Great Arteries With a Systemic Right or Left Ventricle

Background Advances in medical and surgical care have improved survival in patients with transposition of the great arteries (TGA), shifting focus toward quality of life (QoL). In this study we evaluate QoL in adults with TGA, including congenitally corrected TGA (ccTGA) and patients with dextro-TGA (d-TGA), by comparing patients with a systemic right ventricle (sRV) and systemic left ventricle (s

A new approach to pipeline FFT processor

A new VLSI architecture for a real-time pipeline FFT processor is proposed. A hardware-oriented radix-22 algorithm is derived by integrating a twiddle factor decomposition technique in the divide-and-conquer approach. The radix-22 algorithm has the same multiplicative complexity as the radix-4 algorithm, but retains the butterfly structure of the radix-2 algorithm. The single-path delay-feedback a

Impact of amoxicillin therapy on resistance selection in patients with community-acquired lower respiratory tract infections : A randomized, placebo-controlled study

Objectives: To determine the effect of amoxicillin treatment on resistance selection in patients with community-acquired lower respiratory tract infections in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Methods: Patients were prescribed amoxicillin 1 g, three times daily (n = 52) or placebo (n = 50) for 7 days. Oropharyngeal swabs obtained before, within 48 h post-treatment and at 28-35 days were asse

The Argolid under Roman rule (31 BC - AD 600)

Popular Abstract in Swedish Avhandlingen behandlar det grekiska landskapet Argolis på östra Peloponnesos och vissa aspekter av livet där under drygt 600 år av romersk överhöghet. I området har man från den tiden funnit lämningar av städer, byar, villor och gårdar så väl som speciella anläggningar för framställning av olivolja, vin och keramik, dessutom badanläggningar, akvedukter, stenbrott, hamnaThis study focuses on the region of Argolid in the eastern part of the Greek Peloponnese during the Roman Imperial era, taking up a variety of aspects of life there based mainly on archaeological evidence. The introduction presents the study area and the background to the study. This is followed in the next chapter by a survey of the various kinds of sites of Roman date found in the Argolid. Citie

Associative Self-Organizing Map

We present a study of a novel variant of the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) called the Associative Self-Organizing Map (A-SOM). The A-SOM is similar to the SOM and thus develops a representation of its input space, but in addition it also learns to associate its activity with the activity of one or several external SOMs. The A-SOM has relevance in e.g. the modelling of expectations in one modality due
