Beyond Sacred/Secular Cities - Exploring Politics of Memory, Space, and Religion in Middle Eastern Nationalisms

Funding agency: SRA-MECW. Duration: 2022-2025 The project is devoted to exploring ‘the city’ as a stage for the construction and contest of nationalist imaginations in the Middle East (and beyond). It aims at unpacking how nationalism, in various national contexts and urban localities, comprises entangled and ambiguous religious/secular imaginaries, providing critical perspectives on conventional

Which patients with Parkinson's disease participate in clinical trials? : One centre's experiences with a new cell based therapy trial (TRANSEURO)

BACKGROUND: There is currently little evidence regarding the selection of patients for clinical trials in Parkinson's Disease (PD), especially those involving experimental therapies delivered using invasive techniques.OBJECTIVE: Understanding which patients are recruited will increase awareness of issues regarding parity of access to clinical trials and have an impact on the wider applicability of

Transient ischemic attack and ischemic stroke patients with or without prior stroke

Objectives: A history of stroke is common in patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) and ischemic stroke (IS), but there are few reports characterizing this group of patients. We aimed to compare characteristics, risk factors, and secondary preventive treatment in patients with TIA or IS with vs without a history of stroke. Methods: Hospital-based data on TIA and IS events, registered from J

Parametric Analysis of the Effect of Pilot Quantity, Combustion Phasing and EGR on Efficiencies of a Gasoline PPC Light-Duty Engine

In this paper, a parametric analysis on the main engine calibration parameters applied on gasoline Partially Premixed Combustion (PPC) is performed. Theoretically, the PPC concept permits to improve both the engine efficiencies and the NOx-soot trade-off simultaneously compared to the conventional diesel combustion. This work is based on the design of experiments (DoE), statistical approach, and i

Long-term market effects of green public procurement

Background and Policy Context: Previous chapters in this book have explored several product-oriented policies, including mandatory laws and product energy labelling, and discussed the importance of an appropriate policy mix. In this chapter, we examine the effects of demand-side policies, with a focus on green public procurement (GPP). GPP has been defined as ‘a process whereby public authorities

Translation and cultural adaptation of the CLEFT-Q into Arabic, Dutch, Hindi, Swedish, and Turkish

Background: Treatment for cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) involves a multidisciplinary team of experts who aim to improve ones’ appearance, health-related quality of life, and speech function. To appropriately measure outcomes in CL/P from the patient perspective, a CL/P-specific patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument is needed. The CLEFT-Q is a self-report PRO instrument developed to evaluate t

Gestational age-related reference values for Apgar score and umbilical cord arterial and venous pH in preterm and term newborns

INTRODUCTION: Despite much literature on reference values of acid-base status in umbilical cord blood at birth, there are as yet no studies performed to determine gestational age-dependent references in cord venous blood and no studies on preterm acid-base standards. Similarly, the normal reference range of Apgar scores for term and preterm infants has not yet been determined.MATERIAL AND METHODS:

Evaluation of a method for isocapnic hyperventilation : a clinical pilot trial

Background: Isocapnic hyperventilation (IHV) is a method that shortens time to extubation after inhalation anaesthesia using hyperventilation (HV) without lowering airway CO 2 . In a clinical trial on patients undergoing long-duration sevoflurane anaesthesia for major ear–nose–throat (ENT) surgery, we evaluated the utility of a technique for CO 2 delivery (DCO 2 ) to the inspiratory limb of a clo

Construct validity, floor and ceiling effects, data completeness and magnitude of change for the eight-item HAKIR questionnaire : a patient-reported outcome in the Swedish National Healthcare Quality Registry for hand surgery

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the construct validity, floor and ceiling effects, data completeness and magnitude of change over time for the eight-item patient questionnaire (HQ-8) in the Swedish Healthcare Quality Registry for hand surgery (HAKIR). Methods: Construct validity was investigated through predefined hypotheses and correlation statistics between the single items i

Fewer invited talks by women in evolutionary biology symposia

Lower visibility of female scientists, compared to male scientists, is a potential reason for the under-representation of women among senior academic ranks. Visibility in the scientific community stems partly from presenting research as an invited speaker at organized meetings. We analysed the sex ratio of presenters at the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB) Congress 2011, where all

Immunohistochemical investigation of prognostic biomarkers in resected colorectal liver metastases : A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: Many studies have investigated the prognostic role of biomarkers in colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). However, no biomarker has been established in routine clinical practice. The aim of this study was to scrutinize the current literature for biomarkers evaluated by immunohistochemistry as prognostic markers in patients with resected CRLM. Methods: A systematic review was performed ac

Does the amount of physical exercise before arthroplasty influence the postoperative outcome?

Background: Clinical studies have evaluated a correlation between preoperative walking capacity or function and outcome after hip and knee joint replacement surgery with contradictory results. Our aim was to investigate the effect of preoperative metabolic and/or aerobic exercise on surgical outcome, as well as to evaluate the effect of cumulated exercise by using a cutoff value at 3.5 hours throu

Professional's and older person's assessments of functional ability, health complaints and received care and service. A descriptive study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate the level of agreement between the needs assessment made by professional on the one hand, and the older person's views on the other. A further aim was to explore if the estimations made by the professional were systematically lower or higher compared to the views of the older person. PARTICIPANTS: The study included 152 individuals, 65+, who recei

Obesity and Surgical Treatment - A Cost-Effectiveness Assessment for Sweden

The rising trend in the prevalence of obesity has become a major public health concern in many countries during the past decades, partly because being obese is associated with comorbidities and death. The cost of treatment for obesity related diseases has become a heavy burden on the national health care budget in many countries. The treatment options for obesity are mainly weight management thera

Evaluation of a new threshold visual field strategy, SITA (Swedish Interactive Test Algorithm), in normal subjects

PURPOSE: We developed a new family of test algorithms. This is an evaluation in normal subjects. METHODS: One eye in each of twenty normal subjects, with a mean age of 37 years (range 26 to 59), was tested twice with each of the SITA, Full Threshold and Fastpac strategies of the Humphrey perimeter at 3 separate visits. Actual test times and number of stimulus exposures were compared. Test-retest
