Neuropsychological functions predict 1-and 3-year outcome in first-episode psychosis

Objective: To examine neuropsychological performance as a possible predictor of course and outcome in first-episode psychotic (FEP) patients. Method: A group of consecutive FEP patients (n = 120) tested with Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales-Revised (WAIS-R) at baseline was compared with a healthy group (n = 30) matched for age, education and gender. Relationship between WAIS-R and both Brief Psy

Identification of novel immunogenic proteins of Helicobacter pylori by proteome technology.

Cell surface proteins of the human gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori, reference strain CCUG 17874, were extracted with acid glycine and fractionated by heparin affinity chromatography. The extracts were subsequently analysed using high-resolution two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and immunoblotting. Four proteins of low molecular masses (25-30 kDa) stained by Coomassie R-350, were iden

Abdominal trauma in persons older than 60 years

Abdominal trauma occurring in persons older than 60 years over a 30-year period (1950-79) in a well defined region of Sweden was reviewed. The 177 patients comprised 12.5% of the total with abdominal trauma during that period. Road traffic accidents were the main cause of trauma (48% of cases). The incidence of motor-car accidents rose sharply during the first two decades of the study. Injuries to

cis-Bis(dimethyl sulfide)dinitratoplatinum(II) at 295 and 150 K

The title compound, [ Pt( NO3)(2)( C2H6S)(2)], crystallizes in the P2(1)/ n space group ( Z' = 2), with pseudo- square- planar coordination geometry. The complex forms dimers with pseudosymmetry C-i arranged in columns along the b- axis direction, with Pt center dot center dot center dot Pt distances of 6.3056 ( 3) and 4.2382 ( 2) angstrom ( at 150 K). Each column is surrounded by six other column

The REAL process - a process for recycling sludge from water works

In order to produce drinking water, coagulants - such as aluminium salts - are widely used for precipitation and separation of impurities from raw water. The residual from the process is sludge, which presents a disposal problem. The REAL process is a method for recycling the aluminium from the sludge. In a first step, the aluminium hydroxide is dissolved in sulphuric acid. In a second step, an ul

The Finnefjeld domain, Maniitsoq structure, West Greenland: Differential rheological features and mechanical homogenisation in response to impacting?

The 35 by 50 km large, Mesoarchaean Finnefjeld domain near Maniitsoq in the North Atlantic craton of southern West Greenland constitutes the central part of the previously proposed, deeply eroded Maniitsoq impact structure with an age of 3.0 Ga. The Finnefjeld domain is an exceedingly homogeneous, quartzo-feldspathic rock mass which superficially appears to be a late-orogenic, deep-crustal, intrus

Towards superhydrophobic coatings made by non-fluorinated polymers sprayed from a supercritical solution

The objective of this study was to create a superhydrophobic surface using polymers that are non-fluorinated and applying them to a surface via rapid expansion of a supercritical solution (RESS). Solubility studies of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and a statistical copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl pivalate (P(VAc-VPi))in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) were carried out using an extra

Electrostatic Interactions In and Between Biomolecules

Således har vi ved hjælp af molekylær simulering undersøgt hvorledes proteiner vekselvirker med protoner, salte, andre peptider og proteinerElectrostatic interactions in bio-molecular systems are important not only in the living cell but also in more technical applications. Using molecular simulation as well as approximate theories the properties of a number of aqueous protein solutions have been studied. This includes interactions with other proteins, protons, charged membranes as well as flexible polyelectrolytes. The focus is on el

Prevalence of faecal ESBL carriage in the community and in a hospital setting in a county of Southern Sweden.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria in patients at various hospital wards and in a group of relatively healthy volunteers, in order to obtain greater knowledge on how common these bacterial strains are in hospital settings and in the general community. Participants (n = 427) were enrolled at a University Hospital and

Motor-equivalent covariation stabilizes step parameters and center of mass position during treadmill walking

We investigated motor-equivalent stabilization of task-related variables (TRV) at times of heel strike in eight healthy young men (23-30 years) who walked on a motorized treadmill at self-selected and prescribed speeds within the normal walking speed range. The TRV consisted of step parameters (step length and width) and the center of mass (CoM) position relative to the support (back and front fee

Investigations to develop a fully adjustable intelligent toilet for supporting old people and persons with disabilities - The Friendly Rest Room (FRR) project

The FRR (Friendly Rest Room) project creates and evaluates prototypes of a more user friendly intelligent toilet for old persons and for persons with disabilities. Additionally, applicable knowledge regarding needs and wishes of old and/or disabled persons and their care persons are documented. In this paper the user driven research approach, ethical aspects and the iterative user centred design p

Enzyme variation and inheritance in Glechoma hederacea (Lamiaceae), a diploidized tetraploid

The chromosome number of the polyploid species Glechoma hederacea was found to be 2n = 36 in a sample of 93 ramets derived from 27 sites in N and C Europe. Variation in 10 enzymes was surveyed in material from S Sweden and S Czech Republic. The genetic control of variation was investigated using segregating progeny from crosses and self-fertilized heterozygous plants. The generic analysis comprise

The Abolition of the Insanity Defense in Sweden and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities : Human Rights Brinksmanship or Evidence It Won’t Work?

The U.N. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) may require the abolition of the insanity defense and similar “special defenses” in criminal law. Proponents argue that abolishing the defense would advance efforts to fully recognize the legal capacity of persons with disabilities on an equal basis with others; detractors suggest it would compound the substantive inequality of

Optimization of wind turbine foundations for poor soil

One of the most important constraints on large-scale civil engineering projects is economic feasibility. All projects are restricted by the cost of construction and materials. A cost analysis of alternative foundation designs for wind turbines is done in this work to aid the choice of design solution. The suitability of different foundation types are compared including a novel solution, with a cir

Can Portfolio Performance Be Improved with Bitcoin during a Global Crisis? - A Study of Portfolio Performance with Diverse Assets during the COVID-19 Outbreak

As a relatively new form of financial asset with unique properties, Bitcoin is increasingly included in portfolios to improve performance. However, research remains limited on how Bitcoin actually affects portfolio performance. This study aimed to broaden the field of research by exploring whether Bitcoin can improve portfolio performance during a global crisis. It sought to answer the question by

Vi strPeople often strive to exhibit a positive facade, both on social media as well as in real life. To suppress one's feelings and force oneself to be positive is something which in popular culture is referred to as “toxic positivity”. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between suppression of feelings, or simply “suppression” according to the emotional regulation model formulate
