Hearing and evasive behaviour in the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella (Pyralidae)

Greater wax moths (Galleria mellonella L., Pyraloidea) use ultrasound sensitive ears to detect clicking conspecifics and echolocating bats. Pyralid ears have four sensory cells, A14. The audiogram of G. mellonella has best frequency at 60 kHz with a threshold around 47 dB sound pressure level. A1 and A2 have almost equal thresholds in contrast to noctuids and geometrids. A3 responds at + 12 to + 1

The domain of concern of Swedish occupational therapists in psychiatric care.

As a consequence of the development of psychiatric care in Sweden, occupational therapists have adapted their roles to changing practice settings. The aim of this study was to investigate the domain of concern of occupational therapists in psychiatric care, operationalized as perceived responsibilities. Furthermore, the relationships of the domain of concern to underlying theories and models, clin

Spädbarnsskrik - en säkerhetsrisk?

A Dutch study is described, in which the occurrence of potentially detrimental parental actions induced by infant crying were assessed and thereafter related to various factors, including the parents’ judgment that the crying was »excessive«. A commentary in the same Lancet issue questions whether this might be interpreted as a »blaming of the victim« process. Official Swedish and international st

Climate Change after the International : Rethinking Security, Territory and Authority

Many strands of contemporary scholarship converge on the image of the international as obsolete, but strongly diverge on the contours of the kinds of politics that are superseding it. The modern state has been pivotal to the meaning of security, territory and authority?concepts central to the idea of the international?but they do not necessarily h

Characterization of an Electrical Sensor for Combustion Diagnostics

The combustion process affects the electrical properties of the gas in the cylinder. Thus the sensor signal contains copious information about the conditions in the combustion chamber. A thorough characterization of the sensor makes it possible to take advantage of a larger portion of this information for

Plant-wide (BSM2) evaluation of reject water treatment with a SHARON-Anammox process

In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) equipped with sludge digestion and dewatering systems, the reject water originating from these facilities contributes significantly to the nitrogen load of the activated sludge tanks, to which it is typically recycled. In this paper, the impact of reject water streams on the performance of a WWTP is assessed in a simulation study, using the Benchmark Simulati

Chemosyndromes in the lichen genus Teloschistes (Teloschistaceae, Lecanorales)

The secondary metabolites of 150 specimens belonging to 29 species of Teloschistes were analysed with HPLC. Seven anthraquinones were detected of which parietin dominated with minor proportions of emodin, teloschistin, fallacinal and parietinic acid. The depsidones vicanicin, caloploicin, and isofulgidin occurred together with some compounds of unknown identity in varying proportions in T. flavica

PIXE analysis to estimate the elemental composition of ectomycorrhizal rhizomorphs grown in contact with different minerals in forest soil

The aim of this study was to investigate possible interactions between minerals and ectomycorrhizal (EM) mycelia. Fungal rhizomorphs growing in association with apatite and/or biotite were sampled both from a laboratory experimental system (Rhizopogon sp. and Pinus muricata) and from mesh bags buried in forest soil in the field. The elemental composition of the samples was analyzed with particle-i

The Integration of Customer Needs in the Establishment of an E-business System for Internal Service

The key success factor for companies is to develop and deliver services and products that satisfy customer needs and create customer value. When introducing e-businesses as a new channel, it is becoming increasingly important to consider customers, since they will have a higher level of influence on the company through the interactive channel. This paper sets out to describe the process of conside

On the missed opportunity cost, GUD, and estimating environmental quality

The missed opportunity cost (MOC), i.e., all foregone alternatives while foraging in a patch, is an important aspect of the cost-benefit analysis of foraging patch use. When making between-environment comparisons it will often be the most important factor influencing behavior, but it has received less interest than other foraging costs. In this paper, we focus on differences between individuals li

The prognostic information of DNA ploidy and S-phase fraction may vary with histologic grade in endometrial carcinoma

DNA ploidy and S-phase fraction (SPF) were determined by flow cytometry on paraffin-embedded tumor material from 243 patients treated during 1980-1985. Patients with well differentiated and moderately differentiated tumors without solid areas (n = 351) formed a low-risk group (corrected 5-year survival 90%). Twenty-four patients, dead of disease within 5 years, were compared with 52 survivors. The

Intermolecular interactions between the SH3 domain and the proline-rich TH region of Bruton's tyrosine kinase

The SH3 domain of Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) is preceded by the Tec homology (TH) region containing proline-rich sequences. We have studied a protein fragment containing both the Btk SH3 domain and the proline-rich sequences of the TH region (PRR-SH3). Intermolecular NMR cross-relaxation measurements, gel permeation chromatography profiles, titrations with proline-rich peptides, and N-15 NMR r
