Persistent malignant stem cells in del(5q) myelodysplasia in remission.

BACKGROUND: The in vivo clinical significance of malignant stem cells remains unclear. METHODS: Patients who have the 5q deletion (del[5q]) myelodysplastic syndrome (interstitial deletions involving the long arm of chromosome 5) have complete clinical and cytogenetic remissions in response to lenalidomide treatment, but they often have relapse. To determine whether the persistence of rare but dist

Quality of life in adolescents with asthma, during the transition period from child to adult.

Aim: The present investigation was designed to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of adolescents with asthma between the age of 16 and 21, when they are transferred from paediatric to adult care. Methods: In this prospective study, 156 teenagers (69 females) with asthma were screened employing spirometry, a histamine challenge, skin prick test for allergy and filled out the 'Livin

Cervical Radiculopathy. Effects of Surgery, Physiotherapy or Cervical Collar. A prospective, randomised study.

En orsak kan vara att tunga lyft i arbetet har minskat, medan sittande arbete med upprepade monotona armrörelser och arbete med framåtböjd nacke t.ex. framför datorskäThe efficacy of surgery, physiotherapy or a cervical collar in the treatment of chronic cervicobrachial pain of radicular origin was evaluated in a prospective, randomised study comprising 81 patients of both sexes, 28-64 years of age, referred for possible neurosurgical treatment. After neurological and radiological examination and giving their informed consent, they were randomised to one of the

The Diabetic Foot. Costs, health economic aspects, prevention and quality of life.

Nervskadorna yThe overall aims were to investigate the economic consequences of foot complications in diabetic patients, to measure the influence of diabetic foot complications on health-related quality of life (HRQL), and to analyse the cost-effectiveness of interventions to prevent foot ulcers and lower extremity amputations (LEA). The economic consequences of foot ulcers and LEA are large both in a short an

Distribution, phenology and condition of Aquatic Warblers Acrocephalus paludicola migrating through Portugal.

We show that the low number of aquatic warblers Acrocephalus paludicola ringed in Portugal is explained by the low ringing effort, and that Portugal is an important country for its migration. Most of the seven sites where the species was detected are recognized for their biological importance and protected. There seemed to be a decline in the number of birds caught, particularly of juveniles, whic

Intuition in Design and Emotion – Transforming raw data into conclusions, a meta-analysis of the 2006 Design and Emotion conference papers.

In any research field the transformation of raw data into conclusions is a critical phase, necessitating a systematic approach. The basic question is: How can I as a (design) researcher corroborate my conclusions? This paper is based on a study of the analytical/interpretative portion of papers published in the Proceedings of the 2006 Design & Emotion Conference. We investigate how the authors

Complete reduction of lymphoedema of the arm by liposuction after breast cancer

The incidence of lymphoedema of the arm after mastectomy ranges between 8% and 38%, and it is an appreciable problem from both functional and social aspects. Conservative and previous surgical regimens have not been completely successful. In the light of these experiences, liposuction clearly constitutes an interesting new surgical approach, which is potentially capable of effecting predictable an

Formation, pattern and physiological effects of short-chain fatty acids - Impact of various indigestible

The short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) formed from colonic fermentation of indigestible carbohydrates have been suggested to exert different physiological effects. In this thesis the fermentability and SCFA produced from various indigestible carbohydrates in the hind-gut were investigated using balance experiments in rats. In the case of propionate, experiments were also performed to evaluate possibl

Adaptation of Work Places and Homes for the Disabled Using Computer-aided Design

When adapting environments for the physically disabled, it is important to encourage and activate not only the person concerned, but also other people involved or affected. A computer aided planning tool has been developed to support the participation of all persons involved, as well as supporting the planner’s (e.g. an occupational therapist) design of the environment. The prototype development a

Efficacy and safety of growth hormone treatment in adults with growth hormone deficiency: a systematic review of studies on morbidity

Due to the positive effects demonstrated in randomized clinical trials on cardiovascular surrogate markers and bone metabolism, a positive effect of growth hormone (GH) treatment on clinically relevant end-points seems feasible. In this review, we discuss the long-term efficacy and safety of GH treatment in adult patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) with emphasis on morbidity: fatal and n

Dependency in elderly people newly diagnosed with cancer - A mixed-method study

Purpose: This study, based on data from an empirical investigation, combines quantitative and qualitative approaches in a mixed-method design to explore dependency in elderly people newly diagnosed with cancer. Methods and sample: 101 elderly people newly diagnosed with cancer were included in the quantitative part, with 16 in the qualitative part. A questionnaire concerning quality of life and de

Assessment of objective and subjective eccentric refraction

Purpose. When performing perimetry, refracting subjects with central visual field loss, and in emmetropization studies, it is important to accurately measure peripheral refractive errors. Traditional methods for foveal refraction often give uncertain results in eccentric angles as a result of the large aberrations and the reduced retinal function. The aim of this study is therefore to compare and

Consistently large marine reservoir ages in the Norwegian Sea during the Last Deglaciation

With the exception of the GS-1/Younger Dryas cold period marine reservoir ages for the Last Deglaciation in the North Atlantic-Norwegian Sea are generally assumed to have been around 400-500 radiocarbon years in magnitude (Earth Planet. Sci. Lett. 126 (1994) 275; Radiocarbon 37 (1995) 53; Quat. Res. 52 (1999) 104; Nature 412 (2001) 724). By comparing the climate records obtained from the GRIP ice-

An Aspergillus nidulans β-mannanase with high transglycosylation capacity revealed through comparative studies within glycosidase family 5.

β-Mannanases are involved in the conversion and modification of mannan-based saccharides. Using a retaining mechanism, they can, in addition to hydrolysis, also potentially perform transglycosylation reactions, synthesizing new glyco-conjugates. Transglycosylation has been reported for β-mannanases in GH5 and GH113. However, although they share the same fold and catalytic mechanism, there may be d

Novel steroid carbamates reverse multidrug-resistance in cancer therapy and show linkage among efficacy, loci of drug action and P-glycoprotein's cellular localization

P-glycoprotein (Pgp) is a major ABC transporter responsible for multidrug-resistance (MDR) in cancer chemotherapy. Pre-clinical MDR modulation studies identified promising chemosensitizers, but none are in the clinic yet. Two novel progesterone-derived carbamates (11-carbamic acid N,N-dibenzyl progesterone ester and 11-carbamic acid N,N-dibutyl progesterone ester) were examined as potential chemos

Reliable wet-chemical cleaning of natively oxidized high-efficiency Cu(In,Ga)Se-2 thin-film solar cell absorbers

Currently, Cu-containing chalcopyrite-based solar cells provide the highest conversion efficiencies among all thin-film photovoltaic (PV) technologies. They have reached efficiency values above 20%, the same performance level as multi-crystalline silicon-wafer technology that dominates the commercial PV market. Chalcopyrite thin-film heterostructures consist of a layer stack with a variety of inte

The predictive value of single nucleotide polymorphisms in the VEGF system to the efficacy of first-line treatment with bevacizumab plus chemotherapy in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer Results from the Nordic ACT trial

Bevacizumab and chemotherapy is a common choice for first-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). So far, no predictive markers have been identified. The aim was to investigate the possible predictive value of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) system in this setting. Pre-treatment blood samples and response evaluations were avail

Cancer Incidence in a Cohort of Swedish Chimney Sweeps, 1958-2006.

Objectives. We examined cancer incidence in an expanded cohort of Swedish chimney sweeps. Methods. We added male chimney sweep trade union members (1981-2006) to an earlier cohort (employed 1918-1980) and linked them to nationwide registers of cancer, causes of deaths, and total population. The total cohort (n = 6320) was followed from 1958 through 2006. We estimated standardized incidence ratios
