Reaction Mechanism for Olefin Exchange at Chloro Ethene Complexes of Platinum(II)

Synopsis In methanol solutions of Zeise's salt, the parent complex [PtCl3(C2H4)]- as well as its solvolysis product, trans-[PtCl2(C2H4)(MeOH)], exchange rapidly with free ethene. The olefin exchange process, which is largely entropy controlled, involves the substitution labile site trans to the coordinated ethene. Abstract Complex equilibria in methanol/chloroform/dichloromethane solutions contain

On the explanation of the paramagnetic Meissner effect in superconductor/ferromagnet heterostructures

An increase of the magnetic moment in superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) bilayers V(40 nm)/F (, Co(3 nm), Ni(3 nm)) was observed using SQUID magnetometry upon cooling below the superconducting transition temperature T C in magnetic fields of 10 Oe to 50 Oe applied parallel to the sample surface. A similar increase, often called the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME), was observed before in various s

Peptide-tagged proteins in aqueous two-phase systems

Polymerer är stora molekThis thesis deals with proteins containing peptide tags for improved partitioning in aqueous two-phase systems. Qualitatively the peptide-tagged protein partitioning could be predicted from peptide data, i.e. partitioning trends found for peptides were also found for the peptide-tagged proteins. However, full effect of the tag as expected from peptide partitioning was not found in the tagged prote

Normal pituitary hormone response to thyrotrophin and gonadotrophin releasing hormones in subjects exposed to elemental mercury vapour

Exposure to elemental mercury (Hg) vapour results in an accumulation of Hg in the pituitary, the thyroid, and the testis. In this study, basal serum concentrations of pituitary hormones (thyrotrophin (TSH), prolactin (PRL), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinising hormone (LH] or their response after administration of thyrotrophin and gonadotrophin releasing hormones did not differ betw

Phenolic compounds from Syzygium jambos (Myrtaceae) exhibit distinct antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities in vivo

HPLC-PDA-MS/MS analysis of Syzygium jambos leaf extract allowed the identification of 17 secondary metabolites, including flavonol glycosides, flavonol di-glycosides, and flavones as well as ellagitannins and phenolic acids. The extract showed promising antioxidant activities in different experimental models. In Caenorhabditis elegans, the extract mediated a dose dependent survival rate and decrea

Dysfunction of Circulating Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes and Monocytes in Ambulatory Cirrhotics Predicts Patient Outcome

BACKGROUND: Cirrhosis represents a state of functional immune paresis with increased infection risk.AIMS: To investigate polymorphonuclear (PMN) leukocyte and monocyte function in ambulatory cirrhotics, and their potential relation with cirrhosis etiology or patient outcome.METHODS: Consecutive ambulatory cirrhotics without current or recent (<1 month) infection or acute decompensation were prospe

Anledningarna till denna självständiga normbildning är flera men utgår ofta från en föreställning om att idrott är ett sådant fenomen som inte lämpar sig atThe phenomenon of sport has historically enjoyed a special status in law, which has meant that sport and its organisations themselves have been regulating their activities by legislating their own laws and rules without interference from the rest of society. The reasons for this are several but are often based on the idea that sport is such a phenomenon that does not lend itself to be force into t

Design and characterization of novel Zr-Al-Fe-Y metallic glasses with nanoscale phase separation

We present a new phase-separated Zr-based metallic glass (MG) composition, free of toxic elements (Ni and Cu) prepared in a glass-forming system by alloying addition. The substitution of Y in Zr70-xAl12.5Fe17.5Yx (x = 0–15 at.%) results in phase separation, giving rise to nano-amorphous domains in a glassy matrix. A homogeneous MG feature is observed for low concentrations of Y up to x = 5. Micros

Postmenopausal hormone therapy and risk of stroke : A pooled analysis of data from population-based cohort studies

Background: Recent research indicates a favourable influence of postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) if initiated early, but not late, on subclinical atherosclerosis. However, the clinical relevance of timing of HT initiation for hard end points such as stroke remains to be determined. Further, no previous research has considered the timing of initiation of HT in relation to haemorrhagic stroke ris

Food sources of early colonising arthropods: The importance of allochthonous input

Arthropod predators and detritivores are among the first colonisers on land surfaces undergoing primary succession. In the absence of higher plants and herbivores, they may either have an allochthonous food source (i.e. of geographically distant origin) or local food source that is sustained by e.g. microorganisms. By studying spiders and collembolans on sites along chronosequences on recently eme

5′-AMP hydrolysis by suspensions and homogenates of pancreatic islet cells from normal and cortisone-treated rats

Suspensions of endocrine pancreas cells were prepared by shaking collagenase-isolated rat islets of Langerhans in calcium-free buffer. When incubated with 1.0 mM substrate at pH 7.4, the cells split, Pi from 5′-AMP at a rate of 87 nmol/h per μg DNA, and from β-glycerophosphate at a rate of 25 nmol/h per μg DNA Km for 5′ AMP was about 54 μM. Adenosine or theophylline inhibited the 5′-AMP hydrolysis

Monitoring monohydroperoxides in docosahexaenoic acid using high-performance liquid chromatography

The oxidation of free DHA has been investigated with respect to monohydroperoxides and polyhydroperoxides, which were analyzed with a novel HPLC method. The temperature and physical system, i.e., bulk and liposome, were varied. We have also studied the effects of antioxidants Such as alpha-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, and juice from sea buckthorn on DHA. The HPLC method, which was performed isocrati

Graded effects of oxygen and respiratory inhibitors on cell metabolism and spontaneous contractions in smooth muscle of the rat portal vein

The basis for the hypoxic relaxation of spontaneous activity in the rat portal vein was investigated by comparing responses to oxygen and the respiratory chain inhibitors amobarbital and cyanide. With the inhibitors, O2 consumption (FO2) is uniformly decreased throughout the cell mass, and thus O2 gradients in the tissue are avoided. Hence the effects are not to be attributed to all-or-none inhibi

Ambulance clinicians’ attitudes to older patients’ self-determination when the patient has impaired decision-making ability: A Delphi study

ObjectiveThe proportion of older people is increasing and reflects in the demand on ambulance services (AS). Patients can be more vulnerable and increasingly dependent, especially when their decision-making ability is impaired. Self-determination in older people has a positive relation to quality of life and can raise ethical conflicts in AS. Hence, the aim of this study was to empirically explore
