Environmental Monitoring by Multi-Spectral Lidar Techniques

Likaså har vissa ämnen sådana egenskaper, att då de belyses med en viss våglängd sänder de ut enMulti-spectral lidar (light detection and ranging) techniques have been developed and employed in various environmental studies, ranging from concentration mapping of volcanic emissions to fluorescence imaging of historical monuments. In both absorption measurements of gaseous species and fluorescence imaging of stones, multiple wavelength excitation and multiple wavelength detection have been app

Occurrence of the hermit beetle (Osmoderma eremita), in Sweden.

We have compiled data on the occurrence of a threatened beetle, Osmoderma eremita, in Sweden. The species inhabits tree hollows with wood mould. The data were compiled from field surveys conducted in 1993-2003, using pitfall traps at 401 localities and using wood mould sampling at 104 localities. We have also gone through published data and all larger Swedish museums and registered old records. O.

Identification and Characterization of the Moraxella catarrhalis IgD-binding Protein MID

Forskningen fokuserar främst på moraxellas ytexponerade antigeMoraxella catarrhalis is now an established human pathogen that frequently colonizes the upper respiratory tract causing most importantly otitis media in children. It has also been associated with sinusitis, laryngitis and lower respiratory tract infections in adults with predisposing conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Current research mainly focuses on surface antige

Resection of colorectal liver metastases: 25-year experience

The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze survival and prognostic factors in 111 consecutive patients undergoing curative resection of liver metastases from colorectal cancer. In addition, the time periods 1971-1984 and 1985-1995 were compared; criteria for first liver resection did not change with time, whereas the attitude toward re-resection was more aggressive during the latter period

Growth of ectomycorrhizal mycelia and composition of soil microbial communities in oak forest soils along a nitrogen deposition gradient

Deciduous forests may respond differently from coniferous forests to the anthropogenic deposition of nitrogen (N). Since fungi, especially ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi, are known to be negatively affected by N deposition, the effects of N deposition on the soil microbial community, total fungal biomass and mycelial growth of EM fungi were studied in oak-dominated deciduous forests along a nitrogen d

Substrate-specific modulation of a multisubstrate proteinase - C-terminal processing of fibrillar procollagens is the only BMP-1-dependent activity to be enhanced by PCPE-1

Members of the bone morphogenetic protein-1/tolloid (BMP-1/Tld) family of metalloproteinases, also known as procollagen C-proteinases (PCPs), control multiple biological events ( including matrix assembly, cross-linking, cell adhesion/migration and pattern formation) through enzymatic processing of several extracellular substrates. PCP activities on fibrillar procollagens can be stimulated by anot

Process-based estimates of terrestrial ecosystem isoprene emissions: incorporating the effects of a direct CO2-isoprene interaction

In recent years evidence has emerged that the amount of isoprene emitted from a leaf is affected by the CO2 growth environment. Many - though not all - laboratory experiments indicate that emissions increase significantly at below-ambient CO2 concentrations and decrease when concentrations are raised to above-ambient. A small number of process-based leaf isoprene emission models can reproduce this

Parametric images of antibody pharmacokinetics based on serial quantitative whole-body imaging and blood sampling

We present a method for pharmacokinetic modeling of distributions of In-111-labeled monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) on individual pixels of planar scintillation-camera images. Methods: The method is applied to 2 sets of clinical whole-body images, each consisting of 6 consecutive images acquired over a week. Quantification is performed on a pixel basis, yielding images in units of Bq/pixel. The image

Chemical and physical characterization of emissions from birch wood combustion in a wood stove

The purpose of this study was to characterize the emissions of a large number of chemical compounds emitted from birch wood combustion in a wood stove. Birch wood is widely used as fuel in Swedish household appliances. The fuel load was held constant during six experiments. Particles < 2.5 mum diameter were collected and the size distribution of the particles was measured. The results were compare

Architecture and sedimentation of outwash fans in front of the Myrdalsjokull ice cap, Iceland

In this study, we introduce the architecture and style of sedimentation of two outwash fans in front of the Myrdalsjokull ice cap, central south Iceland, that broaden different types of ice-marginal sedimentation. At Kotlujokull, a southeastern outlet of the ice cap, fan formation was monitored from the late 1970s to 2002; thus, the style of sedimentation is well understood and the relationship to

Effects of tiagabine, a gamma-aminobutyric acid re-uptake inhibitor, on normal rat bladder function.

PURPOSE: Previous reports have demonstrated the inhibitory effect of exogenous gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on micturition. In the current study we tested whether tiagabine (Sanofi Synthelab., Newcastle-upon Tyne, United Kingdom), a GABA re-uptake inhibitor increasing endogenous GABA concentrations, would affect micturition in awake rats or influence rat detrusor contraction in vitro. MATERIALS

The effect of nitrogen deposition on nitrification, carbon and nitrogen mineralisation and litter C : N ratios in oak (Quercus robur L.) forests

The present study addresses the question why there is a positive relationship between nitrogen deposition and potential net nitrogen mineralisation and nitrification in oak (Quercus robur L.) forest soils in south Sweden (Falkengren-Grerup et al., 1998), and how this is related to the carbon mineralisation. We tested three hypotheses based on European studies (Persson et al., 2000a,b) that postula

EULAR evidence based recommendations for the management of hand osteoarthritis: report of a task force of the EULAR standing committee for international clinical studies including therapeutics (ESCISIT)

Objectives: To develop evidence based recommendations for the management of hand osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: The multidisciplinary guideline development group comprised 16 rheumatologists, one physiatrist, one orthopaedic surgeon, two allied health professionals, and one evidence based medicine expert, representing 15 different European countries. Each participant contributed up to 10 propositio

Remodeling of the thoracic aorta after stent grafting of type B dissection: a Swedish multicenter study.

Aim. Endovascular repair of complicated type B dissections has evolved as a promising alternative to open repair. Previous studies have indicated that continued false lumen flow is a predictor of continued aortic dilatation and risk of rupture during follow-up. This multicenter study was conducted to analyze the postoperative changes of the false lumen after endografting of complicated type B diss

The use of biomass energy in the pulp and paper industry and the prospects for black liquor gasification combined cycle generation

The world production of paper and paperboard products, which increased 3.3% per year since 1980, reached 243 million tonnes in 1991 and is expected to continue to grow by about 2.5% per year over the next decade. Consumption levels in 1990 ranged from 2.8 kg per capita in India to 313 kg per capita in the United States. The biggest producers of pulp are the United States, Canada and the Scandinavi
