TuFT: Tunnel Fire Tools - Teknisk dokumentation

TuFT kan beskrivas som ett myWithin the Swedish research project Rescue tactics and methodology during fires in underground facilities, a simple decision support tool has been developed. The tool can, for example, aid decision makers involved in the early phase of road and rail tunnel fire risk assessments. The tool has been developed at Lund University and has been termed TuFT, which is an abbreviation for Tunnel Fire Tools.

Water resources management in a homogenizing world: Averting the Growth and Underinvestment trajectory

Biotic homogenization, a de facto symptom of a global biodiversity crisis, underscores the urgency of reforming water resources management to focus on the health and viability of ecosystems. Global population and economic growth, coupled with inadequate investment in maintenance of ecological systems, threaten to degrade environmental integrity and ecosystem services that support the global socioe

Haldex Barnes Hydraulics (HBH) is a company which produces hydraulic aggregates for use in forklifts, construction equipment, and trucks. The last two years the company has expanded. This has lead to an insufficient production of aggregates. Thus wishes HBH to increase their production without making to large investments. This report includes a now-state analysis of the problems and where they ar

VarioML framework for comprehensive variation data representation and exchange

Background: Sharing of data about variation and the associated phenotypes is a critical need, yet variant information can be arbitrarily complex, making a single standard vocabulary elusive and re-formatting difficult. Complex standards have proven too time-consuming to implement. Results: The GEN2PHEN project addressed these difficulties by developing a comprehensive data model for capturing biom

Sustainability exploration and sustainability exploitation: from a literature review towards a conceptual framework

Theoretical and empirical research often points to a positive relation between corporate sustainability and organisational performance; however, attempts to conceptualise the multi-dimensional nature of sustainability practices are rare in the current literature. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to present a conceptual framework to aid in understanding and explaining the relationship between sus

The interplay between bacterial community composition and the environment determining function of inland water bacteria

We hypothesized that habitats differing in water flow regime would differ in bacterial function either because of differences in the local environment, in bacterial community composition (BCC), or in the mechanism shaping BCC (community assembly). In 20 lakes and 17 inlet streams BCC was analyzed by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism of the gene coding for 16S ribosomal RNA, and bac

Soil bacterial and fungal communities across a pH gradient in an arable soil.

Soils collected across a long-term liming experiment (pH 4.0-8.3), in which variation in factors other than pH have been minimized, were used to investigate the direct influence of pH on the abundance and composition of the two major soil microbial taxa, fungi and bacteria. We hypothesized that bacterial communities would be more strongly influenced by pH than fungal communities. To determine the

Recurrent Streptococcal Pharyngotonsillitis Studies on etiology and treatment

A streptococci (GAS) is the etiological agent in 30-50% of cases. Phenoxymethylpenicillin (pcV) is the drug of choice in Sweden. However, the failure rate is as high as 5-25% and further pcV treatment is followed by still higher failure rates. The background of failures remains largely elusive. The aim of the studies was: 1 To investigate the short- and long-term

Striking a balance between the costs and benefits of increasing response capability : A microworld study of the effect of capability assessments

The Hyogo and Sendai frameworks highlight the key role of disaster risk management (DRM). However, the guidance is limited on how to best conduct DRM activities, such as capability assessments, to reduce the impact of disasters. In this study, we examine the effectiveness of different ways of presenting capability assessments, both when dealing with so-called high impact/low probability (HILP) eve

Symbol support: A research concerning the development of a web authoring tool in the WWAAC project

This Master's thesis is a part of the present EC-project called WWAAC, World Wide Augmentative and Alternative Communication. WWAAC is a co-operation between a few companies and organisations in Europe that aim for making a larger part of Internet services more accessible for people with communication difficulties. The users are often not capable of reading, writing or speaking so they may use

Ribosomes and subunits from Escherichia coli studied by asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation

PIn this thesis asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (FFF) separations of ribosomes and subunits have been studied. Ribosomal material was prepared from Escherichia coli (E. coli) cells and analyzed by the size separation technique. The five main peaks in the fractograms correspond to transfer RNA (tRNA), unidentified proteins, small subunit, large subunit, and ribosome. The accuracy of the

Mediatized tourism : The convergence of media and tourism performances

Popular culture and tourism are intertwining. The use of film and literature amongst destination marketing organisations is a global trend, but how can we understand this phenomenon and all the processes involved? Up to now popular culture and tourism have been researched mainly from a single media perspective. However, it is difficult to separate the impact of one media product from that of anoth

The Intensive Care Unit syndrome/delirium, patients' perspective and clinical signs

The condition of the illness, the specific caring situation and the environment lead to significant changes and effects in the senses and perceptional abilities. Under these conditions some patients can develop symptoms of the Intensive Care Unit syndrome/delirium.

A Multi-Objective Optimization Approach for Solar Farm Site Selection: Case Study in Maputo, Mozambique

Solar energy is an important source of clean energy to combat climate change issues that motivate the establishment of solar farms. Establishing solar farms has been considered a proper alternative for energy production in countries like Mozambique, which need reliable and clean sources of energy for sustainable development. However, selecting proper sites for creating solar farms is a function of

Providing rapid feedback in generated modular language environments adding error recovery to scannerless generalized-LR parsing

Integrated development environments (IDEs) increase programmer productivity, providing rapid, interactive feedback based on the syntax and semantics of a language. A heavy burden lies on developers of new languages to provide adequate IDE support. Code generation techniques provide a viable, efficient approach to semi-automatically produce IDE plugins. Key components for the realization of plugins

Modelling of mineral dust for interglacial and glacial climate conditions with a focus on Antarctica

The mineral dust cycle responds to climate variations and plays an important role in the climate system by affecting the radiative balance of the atmosphere and modifying biogeochemistry. Polar ice cores provide unique information about deposition of aeolian dust particles transported over long distances. These cores are a palaeoclimate proxy archive of climate variability thousands of years ago.

Researching farmer behaviour in climate change adaptation and sustainable agriculture: Lessons learned from five case studies

Understanding farmer behaviour is needed for local agricultural systems to produce food sustainably while facing multiple pressures. We synthesize existing literature to identify three fundamental questions that correspond to three distinct areas of knowledge necessary to understand farmer behaviour: 1) decision-making model; 2) cross-scale and cross-level pressures; and 3) temporal dynamics. We u
